Job Summary

Coordinates and participates in special academic advising programs and services.

Responsibilities

A Typical Allocation of Duties for Any Advisor II May Include:

Coordinate special programs and services - 15%
Coordinate and participate in special academic advising programs and services.

Develop and implement programs and materials - 15%
Develop and implement academic advising polices, programs, and materials.

Advising - 35%
Advise students with regards to their educational, career, personal and social development needs. Refer students to academic and personal resources as appropriate. Assist students in selecting courses.

Interpret polices - 10%
Clarify and interpret academic policies and degree requirements.

Student files - 10%
Maintain and update student files and records. Ensure compliance with FERPA regulations.

Monitor student progress - 15%
Monitor student academic progress and provide developmental programming focused on student academic needs. Advise, monitor, and work closely with students on academic probation and those returning from academic suspension.

Supervisor Expectations for this Specific Position Include:

  • Provide support and guidance for students identified through various means as being at risk in terms of retention, progression, and graduation either on an individual basis or in group settings and may include teaching a 1-3 credit course that satisfies a core curriculum requirement.
  • Work individually or with a team to develop and implement programming to promote student success on topics such as time management, study skills, and academic planning.
  • Work individually or with a team to monitor and respond to early alerts submitted by faculty and intervene as needed.
  • Work closely with faculty and staff to ensure a coordinated approach to student success. This may include attending meetings, serving on department, division, or university-wide committees, and collaborating with various campus stakeholders on interventions when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions, including notes from coaching sessions, interventions and referrals made.
  • Stay current on best practices and research in student success and retention.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, maintaining awareness of their diverse needs and backgrounds.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with students, faculty, and staff. This includes responding to emails and inquiries in a timely manner, providing clear and concise information.
  • Participate in the evaluation of programs and other intervention strategies used.
  • Adhere to University policy regarding ethical conduct.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regards to staff and student interactions, respecting privacy and ensuring that work is completed in an ethical and professional manner.
Required Qualifications

Required Experience
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related work experience.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).

Position Requires completion of VSU's Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101.
