Salary: $65-75K+/year DOE

Job Purpose: The Fieldwork Manager facilitates, organizes, and implements the fieldwork program in conjunction with Crew Leaders and staff at TEA and Tahoe Summer Camps. 


Summary of Roles and Responsibilities: 

Fieldwork Coordinator:

  • Support Crew Leaders in designing and facilitating adventurous experiences on local, regional, national, and  international levels. 
    • Work with teachers to bolster the adventure and character aspect of their fieldwork, linking expeditions with adventure and academic content.
    • Backwards plan with teachers to create and implement the lessons/fieldwork that teaches students the skills that they would need on these peak experiences.
    • Work with teachers to determine and build skills that they need in order to safely implement lessons and conduct fieldwork safely and effectively.
    • Document the lessons created and input them into the school-wide scope and sequence adventure curriculum, which would produce students competent in the outdoors.
    • Partner with Crew leaders to create team-building experiences for students.  For example, rope course elements, crew challenges, etc.
  • Maintain and document all adventure gear and accessories.
  • Department financial oversight is the responsibility of this position. It involves budget planning and approval, purchasing, and expense oversight.. Working with the TEA finance department, the role will successfully carryout fieldwork for a dynamic program within budget. 
  • With the transportation manager, develop and carry out transportation requests of buses and TEA SUVs.Provide the transportation director all necessary documentation.
  • Hiring, training, and management of fieldwork guides
  • Support fieldwork with leading or co-leading up to 60 overnight experiences during the academic year.

Risk Management:

  • Update the Wilderness Adventure Manual.  Train faculty and staff with procedures therein. Keep faculty and staff abreast to such updates
  • Conduct risk assessments and reconnaissance for field studies
  • Maintain and obtain all necessary and relevant certification through training and teaching. (WFR, AMGA SPI, AVI I)
  • Manage the OSIC (Off-site Incident Commander) program and serve as OSIC. Be available and on-call to support crews who are in the field.
  • Track current certification of all faculty and staff. Facilitate internal professional development training for faculty, staff, students, and per diem guides – such as medical training and hard skills training ie. CPR, WFR, WFA, etc.
  • Review and debrief medical emergency responses and document them.
  • Track and analyze incident reports to inform risk management policies and serves on the risk management and safety committee

Tahoe Summer Camp (TSC):

  • Support summer camp programs with the TSC Director.
  • Work with TSC directors to support summer camp programs and needs. Coordinate gear and equipment purchases and allocation of resources to fieldwork. 
  • Provide training to TSC staff.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Identify and regularly participate in professional development opportunities that promote self-efficacy and extended knowledge of one’s skill set. 
  • Devote reasonable time to understand internal processes and procedures.  Abide by TEA’s internal procedures, including but not limited to finance, transportation, HR, admissions, marketing, fundraising, etc.
  • Attend Faculty/Staff Meetings when applicable, participate in school-wide events including but not limited to:  Faculty Camping Trip, Compass Day, Back to School Orientation, Parent Forums, Open House Events, Celebration of Learning, Graduation, Internal and External Professional Development, etc. 
  • Support the School’s membership in ISEEN (Independent School Experiential Education Network), including participation in annual conferences and on subcommittees. 
  • Devote a reasonable amount of time to complete additional duties as assigned by the Director and/or Head of School and or designee. 
  • Agree to and abide by the expectations outlined in the Tahoe Expedition Academy Employee Handbook.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree – Required
  • 5 or more years of experience in Risk Management and Outdoor Adventure Experience
  • Be a results-driven, organized, and motivated self-starter with initiative, creativity, and drive
  • Wilderness First Responder and other relevant certifications
  • Ability to articulate TEA’s compelling story to prospective and current families and students
  • Computer skills, including experience with Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, including skills in Excel and/or Google Sheets.


Physical Requirements: 

Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, and equipment for children, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
