Salary: $15.50 - $20.00/hr DOE

Job Overview

The primary duty for this role is direct patient care in the 911 EMS setting. The EMT-B is the entry level care position for field staff which focuses primarily on Basic Life Support services and supporting Paramedics during the treatment of acutely ill or injured patients. The AEMT is the second level of this certification and are able to independently treat and transport higher acuity patients in the absence of Paramedic care. Part Time and Per Diem employees work based on monthly availability that is provided by the employee to management. Typically, a Part Time employee works 24 hours per week and participates in the WV EMS Retirement System (EMSRS) and Per Diem employees work 12 - 48 hours per month and do not participate in EMSRS.



Education

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Successful completion of a WV or Nationally accredited EMT program


Certifications & Licenses

  • EMT Basic (WV or National Registry)
  • CPR for Healthcare Providers
  • Emergency Vehicle Operators Certification (EVOC)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Level
  • Infection Control
  • Valid US Driver’s license with no more than 6 points assessed to driving record


Skills and Abilities

  • The ability to communicate effectively via telephone and radio
  • The ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situations
  • The ability to read, interpret and act upon patient care protocols
  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in high stress scenarios


Physical Requirements

  • The ability to independently lift 80 pounds safely
  • Must have good manual dexterity with the ability to perform all tasks related to patient care.
  • The ability to stand, walk, crawl, lift, bend over, stoop, climb stairs and work in environments where space may be severely limited
  • The ability to work in moderate to severe weather
  • The ability to spontaneously respond to the demands of emergency health care
  • The ability to wear proper PPE including an N-95 face mask or respirator when working in an IDLH environment


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Works assigned tour of duty at the appropriate station.
  • Provides Basis Life Support Services.
  • Responds to EMS incidents and assists in emergency activities.
  • Drives and operates ambulances in emergent and non-emergent situations.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of patient interactions.
  • Maintains & repairs EMS tools & appliances.
  • Services motorized EMS apparatus as directed.
  • Operates EMS equipment.
  • Cleans, maintains, and makes minor repairs to EMS equipment.
  • Participates in routinely scheduled in-service training.
  • Performs other related tasks as required or requested.
  • May become as a trainer for students and new hire employees.



Additional Requirements

  • There are no additional requirements for the EMT-Basic level certification.
  • Additional requirements for the Advanced EMT include:
    • Successful completion of nationally accredited AEMT training program
    • Successful completion of the National Registry Cognitive and Psychomotor exam.
    • Successful completion of the WV AEMT cognitive exam.
    • Must obtain and maintain the following certifications:
      • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
      • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
      • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
