OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Managing Director of Hebrew and Israel Studies who operates with a high sense of urgency and possesses a strong work ethic. You will play a pivotal role in fostering Modern Hebrew language learning, Israel Studies, and a global perspective within our network of schools across the country. The Managing Director will lead Hebrew staff in all aspects of curriculum development, execution, and assessments and will find meaningful ways to integrate Hebrew and Israel learning elements across other subjects such as social studies, studies, music, science, and art.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS

The Managing Director (MD) will be a member of Hebrew Public's senior leadership team and will report to the Chief Schools Officer.

Academic Leadership

  • Implement and encourage culturally responsive teaching practices by developing a curriculum that reflects and respects the cultural diversity of the student body.
  • Provide regular, high-quality in-school coaching at a frequency determined in collaboration with the Chief Schools Officer in response to program needs assessment and overall network and department priorities.
  • Demonstrate competence and familiarity with social studies programs, ensuring effective curriculum development and implementation by teachers across the network and for all grades K-8.
  • Drives initiatives to enhance literacy skills across diverse student populations.
  • Lead the Hebrew language department by ensuring that a rigorous Hebrew language-based curriculum is delivered with fidelity and that the Hebrew language is integrated into other content areas and classroom routines when appropriate to holistically promote the acquisition of the Hebrew language and improve student achievement.
  • Meet with Hebrew leaders virtually in 1:1s and as a group to provide coaching and development.
  • Provide training for Hebrew teachers as needed and monitor training provided by other members of the team for quality and content.
  • Keep current with research, new ideas, practices, and developments within the schools, the state, and nationally.

Organizational Leadership & Vision

  • Serve as the Hebrew and Israel studies expert for the affiliate schools and find ways to engage with their programs, provide practical instructional support, and bring Hebrew leaders together.
  • Assess the current state of institutionalized systems and resources and create an ideal vision with a path to ensure systems and resources exist to sustain progress over time
  • Bring valuable experience working within urban or high-poverty school settings, understanding the unique challenges and opportunities associated with these environments.
  • Establish a long-term vision for Hebrew, Israel Studies, and Global Citizenship and a path to get there with measurable benchmarks and a time-bound path.
  • Document and communicate to external communities about achievements in Hebrew, Israel Studies, and Global Citizenship via high-caliber research studies and article writing
  • Proven results-oriented leader with the ability to establish and maintain systems for organization-wide goal-setting and measurements of success
  • Experience developing long and short-term strategic plans to support the development of a whole school program that resulted in meeting strategic goals

Curricular Leadership

  • Dramatically improve Hebrew program, including all aspects of curriculum development that will adhere to the best academic practices; teacher professional development and classroom coaching; development and implementation of robust student assessment.
  • Expand the Israel Studies content, embedding it in subjects other than Hebrew such as social studies and science.
  • Deepen the educational content around signature 8th-grade experiences. For example, Capstone trip to Israel and Washington, DC summit.
  • Create concrete initiatives that integrate Hebrew and Israel throughout the school curricula and overall student experience.
  • Oversee high-quality creation and delivery of all Hebrew, Social Studies and Global Citizenship curriculum in all grades and at all schools.
  • Manage the development of effective, standards-aligned programming and lessons that support student learning and achievement of state learning standards and school academic objectives and benchmarks.
  • Ensure that the lesson objectives align with the curriculum, state standards, and network goals.
  • Possess proficiency in subject matter and knowledge of curricular guidelines.

People Leadership

  • In close coordination with the Israel office director, support Israeli teachers’ professional development and oversee acculturation in the United States, which includes collaboration and support for school-based teams in this area.
  • Evidence of ability to anticipate challenges and problems before they occur and quickly lead others in promptly implementing various effective and realistic solutions.
  • Evidence of experience leading through influence and emotional intelligence.
  • Exhibits significant experience managing, coaching, and leading Senior Leaders, implementing strategies to support professional growth and development.
  • Exhibits a strong cultural competency, fostering an inclusive environment for both teachers and students in K-12 schools.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters Degree preferred
  • Academic and curricular leadership experience required
  • Fluency in Hebrew speaking, reading, and writing
  • Background in delivering Social Studies, Civics, or History curriculum required
  • Five years of full-time public school classroom teaching experience in grades Pre-K-8 strongly preferred.
  • A team player with a strong work ethic and consistent follow-through
  • A strong understanding of the social and emotional development of children
  • Exceptionally effective at building lasting and meaningful relationships with school-based leaders
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong track record of student achievement in past roles
  • A strong sense of personal accountability for network-wide student achievement
  • An unshakable conviction that all students can learn at a high level
  • Ability to be at schools in New York and Philadelphia a minimum 3 out of 5 days per week
  • Ability to travel to affiliate schools in LA, San Diego, Minnesota, Washington DC and New Jersey at least once each school year

Salary and benefits will be highly competitive, equitable, and commensurate with experience. The salary range starts at $150,000 based on experience and qualifications.
