MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation-minded 11-week Civil or Environmental Engineering NPS Conservation Fellows Intern to provide the NPS Pacific West Region of the National Park Service (Regions 8,9,10,12) with civil and environmental engineering support. The Pacific West Region includes more than 60 national park sites within the eight states of California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands. With offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu, the Pacific West Region works to safeguard our National Park treasures for the enjoyment of future generations and to share their stories with more than 61 million visitors each year. 


As an engineering intern, you will assist NPS engineers and project managers with infrastructure projects relating to water supply, treatment, and distributions systems, wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment systems, and roads and trails. Such support will include site visits, including system assessments and data collection, development of site visit reports, preparation of drawings, specifications and construction estimates. In this role, you will experience being a “full time” engineer in the NPS and be mentored in developing your method of real-world problem solving.

 

The NPS Conservation Fellows program is a unique opportunity designed for current undergraduate, graduate, or PhD students to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The intern will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Term: 11 weeks, Full Time (40 hours per week). Start and end dates somewhat flexible.

Duty Station: Located in the Pacific Standard or Mountain Time Zones

Position Duties:

  • Assist NPS professional engineers with facilities infrastructure projects.
  • Perform site visits to project locations primarily within California and Nevada.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data including; water usage trends, wastewater generation, visitor use data, linear regression and data correlation.
  • Produce Utilize engineering concepts and calculations to produce technical engineering reports and make critical design decisions. and specifications writing.
  • Prepare preliminary and final engineering drawings, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Assist with developing permitting packages.
  • Provide CADD drafting support services to NPS PMs in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Eligibility:

  • Prefer applicant to be located in an area with reasonable driving access to a major airport (such as DIA, SEA, or LAX).  Applicant must be located in either Pacific or Mountain timezone.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering. Special consideration will be given to interns in their 3rd or 4th year of their 4-year Bachelor’s degree program or first year of graduate school. 
  • Coursework on water and wastewater systems.
  • Coursework or experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D (preferred).
  • Technical writing and communication skills. 
  • Strategic thinking ability.
  • Able to self-start/work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to adapt new skills and ideas to the public sector.
  • Able and willing to perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to operate in remote areas.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check.
  • Able to complete agency computer, privacy, and records management training successfully.
  • You are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident and have a valid driver’s license.

 

Work Environment:

The intern will mostly be in office but site visits will be required.


Physical Requirements: The work involves both office and field work and ranges from sedentary to strenuous. Field work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough surfaces and operating in remote environments. Member should be comfortable carrying their own supplies (food, water, etc.) through similar conditions, as well as bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching. Field work can take place in a variety of weather conditions, including both cold and extremely hot temperatures.  Applicant must be comfortable driving in off-road conditions and boarding large and small boats.


Qualifications / Skills and Knowledge:

Applicants must have a degree (or be pursuing a degree) in civil or environment engineering.  Resumes must contain enough information to show that the applicant meets the experience as defined in this announcement.
