Baxter is on a journey to separate our ~$5B Kidney Care segment into a standalone company. Vantive* will build on our nearly 70-year legacy in acute therapies and home and in-center dialysis to provide best-in-class care to the people we serve. We believe Vantive will not only build our leadership in the kidney care space, it will also offer meaningful work to those who join us.

At Vantive, you will become part of a community of people who are focused, courageous and don’t settle for the mediocre. Each of us are driven to help improve patients’ lives worldwide. Join us as we revolutionize kidney care and other vital organ support.

*Completion of the proposed separation of Kidney Care from Baxter into a standalone company (to be named Vantive) remains subject to the satisfaction of customary conditions.

Your role:

As a Senior Principal Engineer of Exploratory and Innovation, you will lead and contribute to the identification and early-stage development of new novel approaches to the treatment of kidney disease. This role will focus on the development of new and novel sensing technologies to improve the safety and quality of care for our patients.

What you'll be doing.

  • Lead research and development efforts to design, prototype and demonstrate feasibility of new sensing technologies for medical applications.
  • Design and optimize sensing elements considering factors such as sensitivity, specificity, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Bring rigorous critical thinking to ensure that key “killer” questions are addressed early in exploratory through best-in-class application of modeling, analysis, and empirical methods.
  • Develop algorithms and signal processing techniques to extract relevant information from sensor data, including noise reduction, feature extraction and pattern recognition.
  • Build and test prototypes of sensing systems, integrating sensors with electronics, firmware and software components.
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize sensor performance, assess accuracy, precision, and robustness in relevant clinical scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including scientists, engineers, and clinicians to translate technical innovations into commercial products.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation including specifications, test protocols, reports and regulatory submissions as required.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies and methodologies in sensing technology and explore opportunities for innovation and intellectual property development.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or related field; advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience (3+ years) in the design, development, and implementation of sensing technologies, preferably in the medical device or healthcare industry.
  • Specific experience in the design and development of optical sensing technologies highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in signal processing, and hardware/software integration.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills.  Proven ability to make sound decisions, think critically and break down complex problems through application of first engineering principles.
  • Experience with relevant laboratory techniques and equipment for sensor characterization and testing.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO) for medical devices and experience with medical device development processes (e.g., design controls, risk management) preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
