JOB PURPOSE:

This Security Guard protects Navajo Technical University (NTU) property against fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and performs the following duties.

This position description indicates in general the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required or assigned to this position

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answers alarms and investigate disturbances, apprehends unauthorized persons and notifies local law enforcement agency as needed and appropriate.
  • Assists in conducting fire drills and takes the lead in emergency situations until help (fire Department, Police Department, Supervisor) arrives.
  • Assists the fire department, environmental health department, and safety officer inspect grounds and facilities to ensure a safe and healthy environment at all times.
  • Controls traffic by directing drivers.
  • Be courteous to all visitors, students, faculty, and staff. Professional standards on tour of duty.
  • Enforces rules and regulations governing NTU and Navajo Nation against loitering, smoking, drug and alcohol use, carrying and transporting contraband.
  • In case of a crime scene, directs control of operations and preserves evidence until arrival of appropriate authorities.
  • Inspects equipment, machinery, and other property to ascertain if tampering has occurred.
  • Investigates and submits incident reports on unusual occurrences to proper authority and supervisors.
  • Maintains daily journal and records entries, such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery and equipment, for use by supervisory staff.
  • May become a first responder to administer First Aid/CPR as needed until medical assistance arrives.
  • Notifies local law enforcement agency to apprehend, arrest, or expel violators off of NTU property.
  • Operates and uses handheld short frequency radio to maintain contact with local law enforcement agency.
  • Operates NTU patrol vehicle in performance of duty.
  • Completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities; interviewing witnesses; obtaining signatures.
  • Performs foot and motorized patrols periodically on campus grounds and facilities during off working hours to ensure that doors, windows, and gates are properly secured.
  • Protects NTU property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
  • Regulates traffic on NTU campus and/or designated area to maintain and safeguard pedestrians from injury.
  • The occupant of this position also performs other duties within the range of his or her qualifications, as assigned by the immediate supervisor or any higher-level authority to which the supervisor reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working on a college campus or academic setting
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Law Enforcement and or Security
  • New Mexico or Arizona Level I Security Guard Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge and proficiency report writing and communication
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico/Arizona Level I Unarmed Guard Card
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a customer service driven mindset
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present information to all levels of internal and external customers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of higher education processes.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy of tribal community Universities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for prolonged periods, walk and stand.
  • Use of hands for dexterity of motions, repetitive movement of both hands.
  • Have normal auditory, visual acuity, and verbal communications skills.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is generally performed on a university Campus setting.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
