Safety Specialist

Summary:

Indiana Packers Corporation (IPC) is a fully integrated retail, foodservice and private label producer of fresh and processed meats based in Delphi, Indiana (near Lafayette, Indiana). Since the start of operations in 1991, IPC has experienced rapid growth from a single pork processing company into a multi-plant diversified producer of fresh and processed meats, with locations throughout America's Heartland and revenues of approximately $1.5B. We are majority owned by Mitsubishi Corp. and have processing facilities in Delphi, Peru & Frankfort, Indiana; Holland, Michigan; and Owensboro, Kentucky. IPC is looking for a Safety Specialist that will partner with our management team to oversee the company's safety programs and create a safety culture. This position reports to the company's Safety Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and apply applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Create and conduct safety related training as needed including new hire orientation, powered industrial truck, fall protection, etc.
  • Conduct, and guide others through, an incident investigation including root cause analysis.
  • Coach team members of all levels, including management, to ensure compliance with all safety programs and applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Identify potential workplace hazards and implement appropriate controls.
  • Create and maintain Job Hazard Analyses.
  • Respond and direct personnel during an emergency.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Communicate to all organizational levels.
  • Work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Work non-traditional hours/shifts as needed including occasional weekends.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or other related field OR 4+ years of relevant job experience as an industrial safety representative or specialist.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and standards including, but not limited to, OSHA General Industry, ANSI, NFPA, and OSHA Recordkeeping.
  • Root cause analysis techniques.
  • Must have excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Must be physically able to bend, walk, stand for extensive periods of time, and able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to maintain a presence on the processing floor.
  • Must demonstrate excellence in attendance and punctuality.

Pluses:

  • Safety certifications (CSP, ASP, OHST, OSHA 30-Hour, etc.).
  • Process Safety Management experience.
  • Ergonomics training/experience.
  • Experience with Workers' Compensation management
  • Emergency Management experience.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
