JOB PURPOSE

The Technical Director actively and fully supports the artistic vision of the theatre through seamless and collaborative implementation of all technical elements. Working closely with and reporting to the Production Manager, the ideal candidate possesses advanced knowledge in theatrical construction and rigging coupled with a strong understanding and ability to support all technical departments. The candidate must fully support TUTS’ unwavering mission to bring professional theatre to our audiences. We are seeking a Technical Director who can deliver a final staged production that is professional, safe, jaw droppingly entertaining and technically superior to any other production nationally.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage off-site scene shop as well as packing and trucking to the performance space.
  • Support all other contributing departments (lighting, sound, costumes, wardrobe, props, and stage management)
  • Estimate and budget materials and labor for construction, transportation, installation, and load-out
  • Work with the Production Manager to schedule skilled labor efficiently and in alignment with the approved budget(s), ensuring that all deadlines are met.
  • Identify solutions to issues, challenges, and changes during the tech process.
  • Maintain ownership of the scenic elements by monitoring scenic drawings, rehearsal reports, show reports and on-site inspections.
  • Accurately plan and execute truck loads
  • Create efficient load-in and load-out plans that address the needs of all departments
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team seamlessly, understanding both disciplines are necessary in a successful production process
  • Must create and be flexible to ever changing and fast-paced work environment where multiple factors such as budget, vision, staff, and deadlines may change
  • Serve as “Manager on Duty” during performances
  • Treat all artisans (artistic, design, performers, and creative) with respect and dignity. Know how to help designers achieve their vision within budgetary limits.
  • Adhere to and fully support all health and safety protocols
  • During load-in/load-out for TUTS' sponsored touring shows by assisting with ordering needed/requested materials, local support from vendors, and local support to the touring staff.
  • Have strong organization skills and a keen eye for detail.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in technical theatre or equivalent work experience, with a minimum of 5 years working in a technical capacity (Carpenter, Lead carpenter or other similar role)
  • Prior experience as a Technical Director or Assistant/Associate Technical Director strongly preferred
  • Experience working with and supervising talented IATSE technicians and artisans
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and other professional theatre design and drafting platforms
  • Advanced knowledge of construction techniques including carpentry, rigging, automation, pneumatics
  • Have or be able to obtain (within 60 days) an OSHA 30 General Industry Card
  • Commitment to a collaborative and positive work environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience managing large groups of people.
  • Ability and commitment to working with diverse groups in terms of gender expression, race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class, and immigrant status.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires the ability to work a variable schedule, evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs. Schedule will adapt depending on season and programs occurring. Some overnight and out of town travel may be required. A moderate degree of physical ability is associated with the Technical Director Position.
