Summary

The Lead Engineer acts as national or regional technical expert within a specific discipline or area of focus. By providing specialized technical expertise across organizational boundaries, the Lead Engineer will leverage deep knowledge of his/her discipline to help create company standards and impact projects across the organization. Responsible for the delivery of technically-sound products that meet internal and external client expectations and are delivered on time and on/under budget. Makes significant design decisions in his/her area of expertise with limited input by Project Manager for assigned projects. May assist with marketing and business development work and may act as Project Manager for certain projects that fall largely within his/her specialized discipline.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Possesses specialized discipline or functional expertise that is utilized across office and/or business line boundaries to complete work.
  • As an individual contributor, uses professional judgment to direct and independently complete assigned engineering designs.
  • Actively assists the Project Manager, or acts as project manager, and assigns tasks and schedules to Staff Engineer (I/II), Project Engineer (I/II) and non-exempt project team members, answers questions, and monitors progress.
  • Checks the accuracy (formal and informal QA/QC) of assigned tasks completed by other engineering and technical staff.
  • Participates in the creation of firm-wide standards related to his/her area of expertise.
  • Makes design decisions for area of expertise that meet the needs of external customers while coordinating the impact of such decisions on related project efforts.
  • Pro-actively identifies technical, schedule or financial issues and seeks resolution from the Project Manager and/or the client, as appropriate to the situation.
  • Assists the Client in bidding or contractor selection if authorized by the Project Manager.
  • Monitors construction and supervises field personnel assigned to a task, data collection or a specific project.
  • Responds to contractor questions and issues and prepares and issues project addenda as needed.
  • Recommends and prepares change orders.
  • Participates in the creation of engineering services proposals, including the calculation/estimation of time schedules and costs of the proposed work.
  • Signs and seals engineering documents as an authorized representative of the company.
  • Independently communicates on technical matters with the client.
  • Acts as technical expert on assigned projects when operating as an individual contributor, and acts as Project Manager on smaller scope or specialty projects as assigned.
  • Provides mentoring and/or technical leadership to less experienced staff in order to develop broad technical expertise for the organization within the Consulting Engineer’s specialized discipline or functional area.
  • Participates in technical and professional associations related to his/her area of expertise and presents technical papers and topics to increase the perceived expertise of the company.
  • Participates in other external relations activities of the firm, including membership/leadership in professional associations, public task forces/committees or other community/technical outreach opportunities as needed.
  • May assist in business development efforts when his/her technical expertise is crucial to positioning the firm to win future work.

Typical Project Types

The candidate will likely participate in projects types including, but not limited to:

  • Urban drainage system design.
  • Natural system design, including stream restoration, wetland design, agricultural/urban BMPs
  • Hydrologic and Hydraulic (H&H) modelling using XPSWMM, ICM Infoworks, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS and other commonly used H&H software.
  • Stormwater Master planning Studies.
  • Floodplain and Clean Water Act related permitting.
  • Structural flood control systems, such as levees, floodwalls and pump stations, and interior drainage studies.

Education and Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, and be professionally registered.
  • Must possess 8 or more years of design/engineering experience and a demonstrated ability to act as an authorized agent of the company to sign engineering documents.
  • Must have a demonstrated specialty or deep functional or discipline knowledge which positions the Lead Engineer as a respected regional/national expert in his/her focal area.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office and discipline specific software programs.
