Biologist (Avian)

We have an immediate need for a mid to senior level Avian Biologist with excellent California bird species identification skills and knowledge of nest ecology, phenology, and behavior. This position prefers previous experience in the Central Valley area.

Job Responsibilities

• Previous experience conducting avian surveys
• Extensive experience identifying avian species in the Central Valley and Foothills
• Previous experience with conducting and leading habitat assessments for special status bird species
• Experience coordinating construction related monitoring for active bird nests
• Scheduling and staffing the field surveys
• Responsible for preparing and reviewing nesting bird survey reports
• Preview experience preparing the proposals, scope of work, and the cost estimates for the bird survey and monitoring
• Help with drafting permit application and environmental documents
• Previous experience managing projects
• Mentor and train junior level staff
• Ability to working independently and conducting avian surveys in extreme temperatures and sometimes strenuous field work
• Travel and overnight stay required

Qualifications and Educations

• Bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife or related field; Masters or PhD a plus
• 3 plus years’ experience working in research or consulting firm desired
• California bird species identification skills to include Swainson’s Hawk, Burrowing Owl, Tricolored Blackbird, and Black Tail
• Excellent time management, communication skills, and ability to meet deadlines
• Experience with GPS units/ArcGIS field Maps (Collectors) a plus and proficient with MS Office Suite
• Ability to travel and maintain a flexible schedule due to unforeseen or last minute project needs
