About this job

POSITION: Director of Bar Preparation

REPORTS TO: Associate Dean of Academic and Student Success

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

RANGE: $125,000 to $155,000

SUMMARY: Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is seeking a Director of Bar Preparation to join its Academic and Student Success program.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Success, the Director of Bar Preparation is responsible for preparing Brooklyn Law School students for New York State’s bar examination and its related components, and for maintaining familiarity with national examinations and specific tests in nearby jurisdictions.

Applicants should articulate a clear vision for the development and implementation of a multi-year bar-preparation curriculum. The Director must stay abreast of developments in national and local bar-related testing; develop and maintain substantial knowledge about academic support and bar preparation programs; and possess the requisite skillset and knowledge to manage third-party providers and hire additional personnel to provide curricular and skills-based support. The Director will also advise the faculty and administration on bar-related matters, maintain data, and prepare periodic reports for administrators and the Dean as needed.

Most notably, the Director of Bar Preparation must possess a keen understanding of the social, psychological, and financial challenges that confront college-age and professional students, and devise a viable, thoughtful strategy for addressing them. This includes providing support and advice to those seeking disability-related accommodations on the bar exam and related standardized exams such as the MPRE. Moreover, the Director must demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for working with and building meaningful learning relationships with both the student body and faculty.

Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating and improving the law school’s bar-related programming.
  • Providing periodic overviews to the faculty and administration regarding the program’s development and ongoing needs.
  • Developing and implementing new curricular programming in conjunction with the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Success where needed.
  • Overseeing and/or teaching bar-preparation courses and programs, as well as mock tests and boot camps.
  • Reviewing and overseeing the current bar preparation company teaching the “pre-bar” course.
  • Analyzing bar passage trends and outcomes; tracking completion rates provided by bar preparation companies; and liaising with students and faculty as data becomes available.
  • Organizing informational workshops on the bar exam throughout the year and skills and content-related workshops during the summer.
  • Counseling graduating students and post-graduate students while studying for the bar.
  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Required:

  • The ideal candidates will have direct experience establishing, developing and/or directing a bar preparation program.
  • Candidates must possess a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school; bar admission from the state of New York; and at least three (3) years of experience in law teaching and/or bar preparation, preferably in an in-school bar-preparation program, an academic-success program, or a commercial bar program involving significant interaction with students.
  • The position described above is envisioned as a senior administrative position and will work closely with other senior administrators and deans.

Brooklyn Law School maintains an excellent benefits package that includes sick, personal, and vacation paid time off, a generous retirement plan, dependent tuition scholarship (Pre-k through undergraduate schooling), and numerous opportunities for professional development.

The Law School values a diverse and vibrant community and affirmatively encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds and life experiences.
