Job Summary:

Provide mechanical design, production fixturing, engineering support, modeling, and analytical work in support of current and new commercial and/or defense related products. Responsibilities will include the creation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and drawings of optical and mechanical components for current and future production processes.

Determines parts and tools needed to achieve manufacturing goals according to product specifications. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the optics manufacturing field. Regularly interface with engineering, production support group, and proactively communicates with internal customers on project status and the resolution of issues that may arise during the production schedule. Research, design, and develop tools, production fixturing, machines, controls, equipment, and mechanical processes.

Additional responsibilities will be the daily review of optical and mechanical drawings created by the candidate and/or from other designers for implementation into RPO’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The candidate will be required to have a vast understanding of mechanical drawing standards, ISO-9001 and ASME y 14.5, along with the ability to create medium to complex Bill of Materials (BOM) for designed products.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

  • Produce high quality models and drawings of optical and mechanical systems using Solidworks and/or NX application.
  • Have a solid understanding of GD&T principals and how to use them.
  • Support drawing revisions, produce bill of materials, product data sheets, and aid other engineers and manufacturing personnel, as requested.
  • Excellent communication skills needed for presenting results to engineering group and non-technical management team.
  • A self-starter, capable of working with little direction or supervision and have the ability to follow procedures.
  • Experience in tool design and fabrication techniques.
  • Manages project budget, plans and schedules project timelines.


Requirements and Competencies:

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • CAD experience required.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to manufacturing plant floor requiring the use of personal protective equipment (ear plugs, safety glasses, etc.)
