Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director will oversee the health care services in their department; assure quality care, resolution of patient concerns, strive for department profitability, while leading and managing the clinical team. With the support of the Director of Clinical Operations (DCO), they will manage work performance of support staff to include training, staff development, work distribution, performance appraisals, adherence to clinic policies and procedures, work schedule, and praise or disciplinary procedures. Identify and implement changes in clinic policy and procedures in consultation with the CMO. Assist with CMO responsibilities when CMO is absent. Develop and monitor department budget with the DCO, CMO and CEO. Maintain consistent and effective communication with designated liaison areas (i.e., Clinic areas, Front Office, Billing). Conduct staff meetings as appropriate.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Definitions:

  • Prime Responsibility - The Department Medical Director takes a leadership role in achieving certain objectives or handling of problems. Such responsibilities are those that can only be reasonably done by an experienced clinician and are clinically oriented functions
  • Shared Responsibility - The Department Medical Director shares in a leadership role with the Chief Medical Officer and the DCO in achieving certain objectives or resolutions to problems
  • Consultative - The Department Medical Director will be consulted on certain issues handled by others. These issues might impact the medical staff
  • Information - The Department Medical Director will be briefed on certain issues that are not of direct interest to them, but are out of courtesy or general interest

Prime Responsibility

  • Provide direct patient care
  • Provide consultation and collaboration with PA/NP providers
  • Oversee the health care services provided in his/her department
  • Manage the clinical staff of assigned department or programs
  • Ensure that in the absence of a primary care provider that a mechanism is established so that a physician is available to review lab and x-ray reports; prescriptions and follow-up medical care is accomplished
  • Ensures adequate continuity of care through coordinated coverage by medical staff
  • Provides a process for proper supervision of new clinician staff. Monitor the performance of a new provider in the clinic during a set introductory period
  • Represents the interest of the department medical staff to management and management to department medical staff
  • Participate in meetings of the medical provider staff to ensure appropriate information exchange; recommendations and decision-making on issues of clinical significance; recommendations from the provider staff on management issues
  • Ensure compliance with federal laws, regulations and standards of practice, including OSHA, CLIA, patient care, employee health and coding and billing
  • Participate as part of centers’ management team
  • Comply with center’s policies and procedures
  • Conduct staff meetings as appropriate

 Shared Responsibility

  • Effectively assists in the setting of policies for clinic operations with an emphasis on quality of care and efficiency
  • In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer and DCO, coordinates the provisions of the clinical services and ensures the effective mobilization of support services in support of quality, cost effective health care services
  • Supervise, in conjunction with the Center Manager and DCO, clinical support staff
  • With the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Executive Officer and HR assist in recruiting and hiring and orient, monitor, direct and evaluate the professional conduct, practices and development of clinical staff
  • Effectively manages resources to budget with the support of the DCO

Consultative Responsibility

  • Effectively oversees the provision of medical services in the Department at SCHC.
  • Effectively manages the nursing department staff with the support of the DCO.

Information

  • Effectively represents the interests of department to other SCHC departments overall, outside agencies and interest groups.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Experience working in a clinical non-profit environment
  • Experience as a licensed physician
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, staff and patients
  • Ability to work collaboratively with management to meet center goals and objectives
  • Satisfactory role model and possesses satisfactory leadership skills for position held
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Board Certified Physician
  • Licensed in the State of California without any limitations on license to practice in area of specialty
  • Current BLS certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous management skills in a similar position
  • ACLS certification
