JOB SUMMARY

The BRC Storage Lead supports the BRC Storage Manager and Assistant Manager in the general operation of the BRC Storage Program. They will take the lead on specific projects and ensure needs are met.  Additionally, they will work with the Placement team to run crews of placement volunteers to assist in the completion of flagging the city. They will also run crews of three (one lead, one crew, and one volunteer) to survey and flag the location of each container.  The leads are also responsible for camp and container inspections. This position will serve as a leadership role within the team. They will be responsible for setting a personal example of conduct and, when appropriate, will assist and share skills with BRC Storage Program Team Members. 


 

This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt role, based in Black Rock City, Nevada running from July to September, 2024.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

BRC Storage Operations (40%)

  • Perform manual labor and lead projects.
  • Flag streets, camps, and containers and assist the team’s development and efficiency.  
  • Support other teams, such as Road Works, Survey, and Fence - as needed.
  • Provide customer support to container owners; assist with PC owner troubleshooting.
  • Work with the BRC Storage Admin Agent with data tracking and management.
  • Monitor for and report any property damage and/or malfunctions, misuse of property, safety issues, or concerns. 
  • Maintain environmental and social awareness; practice discretion as necessary and escalate issues.

 

Team Support (35%)

  • Help train BRC Storage Volunteers and inform them of the protocols, procedures, and rules.
  • Ensure the general environment and overall security, organization, and functionality of the BRC Storage Program are kept to standards outlined.
  • Maintaining clear communication with the BRC Storage Manager and the BRC Storage Admin Agent. 
  • Work with the BRC Storage Program team and maintain awareness of the timeline, the overall BRC Storage workflow, and the crew schedule.
  • Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job, instructing, and sharing skills as necessary.
  • Attend and support crew attendance at all required meetings, including the morning meeting.
  • Learn, share, and use the proper communication pathways for escalating personnel issues.

 

Administration (20%)                                                                                                 

  • Before the start of container transportation, work closely with the BRC Storage Manager and Admin Agent to confirm which containers will move to Playa and which containers will remain at The 360 or alternative locations in Black Rock City.
  • Collection and organization of container maps.
  • Create and execute a plan to visit camps suitable to the year based on information provided by the GM, Manager, and Admin Agent.
  • Communicate with camp contacts directly when additional information for container placement is necessary; foster good working relationships with PC owners and camp managers.
  • Create and keep an up-to-date visit/maintenance/record and document any issues or concerns PC owners may have (including repair maintenance, paint, or labeling) and supply all information to the BRC Storage Admin Agent.
  • Record and document the placement of security banding on each container and the tracking of the band numbers and supply all information to the BRC Storage Admin Agent
  • Work with the BRC Storage Program Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.

 

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Be familiar with and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.
  • Read and abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the Nevada Operations Manual, DPW Handbook, and BRC Storage Program Manual. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


 

LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Mentoring – Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.


 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required

  • 2+ years working in Black Rock city with a clear understanding of the map, operations, and players.
  • 1+ year customer service experience.
  • 1+ year utilizing survey equipment and/or executing on ground surveys.
  • Experience leading volunteers and apprentice level staff. 
  • A keen eye for maps and a good sense of direction.
  • Reliable; fulfills obligations.
  • Open to change and considerable variety in daily tasks.
  • Able to follow directions through to task completion.
  • Effectively manages own time and the efforts of the team as a whole.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment, including drastic temperature changes, high winds, and low visibility.
  • Able to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.  
  • Abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the NVO Handbook, Ranch Protocols, and the 360 S.O.P.


 

Preferred

  • Experienced and comfortable using 2 way radios.
  • Knowledge of First-Aid.
  • Customer Service history.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

 

 

COMPENSATION: 

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $16.00  to $18.50 per hour.


 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:  n/a
  • On-playa:  This position requires periods of lifting, bending, kneeling, and squatting.  This position will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health and endurance. This will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Most of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
