DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, Michigan’s first Level I Trauma Center, helped pioneer the evolution of emergency medicine and currently has one of the busiest and most well-equipped emergency departments anywhere. The first and largest verified burn center in the state is at Receiving, and it is one of only 43 in the nation. Receiving also offers the state’s leading 24/7 hyperbaric oxygen program, Metro Detroit’s first certified primary stroke center, and the nationally recognized and accredited DMC Rosa Parks Geriatric Center of Excellence.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of designated management and in collaboration with support staff (e.g., clinical nurse specialists and nurse educators), plan, implements and evaluates processes related to performance improvement, staffing effectiveness, fiscal management, staff competence and customer service outcomes within area of responsibility. Ensures that regulatory requirements/standards, policies and procedures are communicated to subordinate staff and integrated into practice. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to plan, implement and monitor clinical activities within assigned service area. Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO requirements and DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.

1. Assures quality and appropriateness of care in assigned service area. Communicates approved performance improvement initiatives, goals and trended report findings to subordinate staff to ensure understanding and compliance. Uses processes and metrics to measure/manage assigned unit compliance. Delegates data collection activities, compiles & analyzes data as outlined in approved staffing effectiveness and performance improvement plans. Provides corrective action plans as required. *

2. Creates an environment of shared decision-making. Promotes multidisciplinary collaboration on patient care and related issues. Serves as a facilitator by removing barriers that prevent staff from effectively and efficiently performing their roles. Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with subordinate staff. Maintains high visibility in assigned area. *

3. Promotes positive customer relations with physicians, patients, families, visitors and employees. Follows up on complaints and reports and provides feedback to impacted parties. Monitors level of patient, staff and physician satisfaction via administration/review of surveys, conducting interviews and formal/informal rounds. *

4. Provides input into review/revision of staff development and competency maintenance programs/plans. Responsible for timely execution of approved plans and for documenting results. Supports professional growth and development of subordinate staff by coordinating schedules for attendance at conferences, committee meetings. Seeks opportunities to enhance staff competence and professional growth through mentoring and gradually increasing responsibilities. *

5. Participates in development of capital and operating budget for assigned service area. Analyzes bi-weekly actual to budget performance and creates variance reports as requested. Seeks opportunities to identify cost-reduction initiatives in areas such as supply/equipment usage. Monitors human resource indicators such as units of service (HPPD), skill-mix, overtime/agency utilization against established clinical indicators such as fall rates to identify potential correlations. Creates balanced staffing schedules. Adjusts staffing ratios and skill-mix according to current volume and/or acuity demands. Monitors payroll practices, including time and attendance for assigned personnel. Supervises creation and implementation of staff assignments.*

6. In conformance with established Human Resource policies, interviews, selects, evaluates, counsels, disciplines and with approval, terminates subordinate personnel. Ensures that appropriate Human Resource activities are completed on a timely basis. Reviews recruitment and retention data to identify trends in performance and develops corrective action plans as required. Participates in recruitment activities as requested. *

7. In collaboration with the designated manager and other healthcare team members, participates in review and revision of policies, procedures and standards related to assigned service area. *

8. Provides a safe and supportive environment for students and subordinate staff. Ensures availability of equipment and supplies. Identifies safety and security risks and takes corrective action. Oversees the general cleanliness of the unit through frequent environmental rounds. Qualifications:

1. Masters degree in Social Work from a college accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

2.Certification by the Academy of Certified Social Workers.

3. Current licensure to practice Social Work in the State of Michigan.

4. Two or more years of progressively more responsible Social Work experience, preferably in a hospital setting. Management experience strongly preferred.

OR

1.BSN or enrollment/documented intent to complete BSN within two years; or, eight or more years of current equivalent clinical experience.

2. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Michigan.

3. Two or more years of progressively more responsible nursing experience. Management experience strongly preferred.
