JOB SUMMARY:

 

A Deputy Court Security Officer is crucial in maintaining safety and security within the court premises. They are responsible for protecting judges, court personnel, visitors, and the general public. The primary duty of a Deputy Court Security Officer is to prevent and respond to any security threats or disturbances that may arise within the courthouse.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

 

  • Security Screening: Conduct security screenings of individuals entering the courthouse, including metal detector scans and bag inspections, to prevent the entry of prohibited items such as weapons or contraband.

 

  • Crowd Control: Manage crowds and maintain order during high-profile or contentious court proceedings, ensuring attendees adhere to court rules and regulations.

 

  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to security incidents, including but not limited to medical emergencies, disturbances, or threats to individuals within the courthouse. Coordinate with local law enforcement agencies when necessary.

 

  • Facility Patrols: Conduct regular patrols of courthouse facilities to identify and address any security vulnerabilities or hazards. Monitor security cameras and alarm systems to detect potential breaches.

 

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with court personnel, judges, attorneys, and other stakeholders to address security concerns and develop strategies to enhance courthouse security.

 

  • Report Writing: Document security incidents, observations, and activities in detailed reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness for administrative and legal purposes.
  • Training and Awareness: Participate in ongoing training programs to enhance knowledge of security procedures, emergency response protocols, and relevant laws and regulations. Educate courthouse personnel and visitors on security policies and procedures as needed.

 

  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and courthouse security policies, including maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information and respecting individuals' rights and privacy.

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training or certification in law enforcement, security, or a related field preferred.

 

  • Flexibility to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as courthouse operations require.

 

 

  • Minimum of 21 years of age

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Prior experience in law enforcement, security, or a related field is highly desirable.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

 

  • Exhibit patience and composure in difficult situations

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse individuals, including judges, attorneys, court staff, and members of the public.

 

  • Excellent judgment and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.

 

  • Physical fitness and the ability to stand for extended periods, perform security screenings, and respond quickly to emergencies.

 

  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and security procedures applicable to courthouse environments.

 

  • Attention to detail and the ability to accurately document security incidents and observations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License with no restrictions

 

Must pass a background check:  Criminal and Traffic

Conviction of a crime will not be an absolute bar to employment

 

Required legal authorization to work - United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

  • Must be in good health and physical condition.  Must possess adequate physical strength to drag an unconscious subject a distance of fifty feet across a smooth level surface.  Must be able to climb decent stairs quickly and repeatedly throughout a work shift.

 

  • Must have vision of 20-40 or better using both eyes, with eyeglasses or contact lenses if required.

  • Must possess sufficient strength to carry a human being from a hazardous area (average - 150 lbs.)

  • Must possess sufficient physical capability to overcome and restrain a combative or resistive subject

 

  • Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the two-way radio, intercom system, and telephone.

 

  • Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the use of firearms, office, and field equipment.

 

  • Visual capacity, including color vision, to monitor movement within and around the facility utilizing close circuit monitors.

 

  • Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the operation of control panels within the facility.

 

  • Ability to detect criminal/hazardous situations.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

Work is performed in circumstances involving hazards such as assault by inmates, biohazards transmitted by inmates, and the possibility of fires and disturbances which may be threatening to life or cause bodily harm. Extremely stressful environment during peak activity periods demanding full attention and coordination of numerous tasks simultaneously.

 

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION:

 

This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to biohazards associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis).  Members are advised that exposure to a biohazard may result in severe illness or death.  Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing.  Inoculation may be required to prevent or treat exposures to biohazards.  The County provides inoculation of HAV, HBV (Testing for TB), Chickenpox, Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, & Pertussis), Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella), and Influenza.  Some vaccinations are only required once in a lifetime, and you may be required to show documentation of the vaccine.  Employees who decline to be vaccinated will need to sign a Declination

 

ELEMENTS OF CONTACT:

 

Personal contact with individual inmates and/or arrestees occurs daily.  This position requires physical contact of touching, controlling, sitting by, and examining an individual's extremities and body cavities.  Hand-to-hand exchanges of documents, personal property, clothing, and other items may be required daily.  Face-to-face verbal communication between the member and the same individuals(s) is required constantly.  This position may require immediate response to medical emergencies where blood, body fluids, or other medical hazards may be present.  The member may not have time to take precautionary and protective measures.
