POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 1. Be knowledgeable, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Always keeping Safety at the forefront of your mind.

  • 2. Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.) and completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

  • 3. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.

  • 4. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

  • 5. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other YMCA programs.

  • 6. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.

  • 7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.

  • 8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

  • 9. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

  • 10. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.

  • 11. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.

  • 2. CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.

  • 3. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

  • 4. At least 16 years of age.
