Canopy by Hilton, a contemporary boutique hotel located in downtown Grand Rapids, is in search of a skilled bartender to support bar operations at Knoop, the hotel's exquisite craft cocktail lounge. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets and addresses guests as quickly as possible, presents them with menus and answers questions regarding drink orders and meal preparation as the expert representative of the establishment.
  • Makes meal and drink suggestions as needed uses suggestive selling techniques.
  • Takes order, presents check to the cook and prepares beverage as the bartender.
  • Records all sales using appropriate cash register and follows all cash handling procedures. Maintains cash bank, guest checks, and processes guest payment according to established procedures. Balances all checks and completes closing paperwork at the end of the shift.
  • Serves order as soon as ready in a professional and pleasant manner. Makes sure proper garnish is on drink/plate before serving. Presents check to guest for payment.
  • Continuously checks on the needs of guests in bar area bussing counter and pouring beverages.
  • Responds in a proactive manner to any guest concerns to resolve.
  • Completes side work to include preparation of garnishes, polishing/rolling silverware, stocking liquor, beer and additional beverages, and glasses, sweeping and cleaning as directed by supervisor. Practices “clean as you go” method, and sanitation standards.
  • Reports all tips received on a daily basis and records them on a tip declaration sheet.
  • Assists with room service duties as necessary
  • Check food before serving it to guest to ascertain that appearance, temperature and portions are correct.
  • Ensure knowledge of menu and all food products and daily specials
  • Uses guest’s names whenever possible and learns guest preferences.
  • Attend meetings/training as required by management.
  • Performs any other duties as requested by supervisor.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to attend to guests, associates and management in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service oriented manner which requires strong customer service as well as written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and communicate in English to adequately perform the duties of the job.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of food and beverage principles and practices.
  • Must be energetic and able to work in a fast-paced environment.


REQUIRED/PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma/GED or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 6 months experience working in a bartending role preferred
  • State-approved alcohol certification


ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

Satisfactory criminal background screening required - Valid driver’s license and safe driving record may be required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for entire shift, balance, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, smell, taste and perform repetitive motions that require manual dexterity.

This position requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. The employee is required to have visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate machinery and tools, determine accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of bar/restaurant areas and make general observations of facilities. This position is primarily indoors and may subject the employee to high or cold temperatures from machinery and moderate noise level.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This position requires variable hours based on the needs of the hotel including nights and weekends.
