Department: Camp Helen Brachman FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Camp Director Driver Status: COA Vehicles if possible

Summary

This position is responsible for reviewing, updating, training, and implementing all health policies and procedures for camp. It is a full-time, summer seasonal position.

This position is not eligible for benefits other than those described in the Employee Handbook.

Main Job Responsibilities

Safety and Health

Goal: Ensure high standards of health and safety in daily living.

  • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed and are alert to campers’ health needs
  • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp (e.g., waterfront, vehicles, offices, kitchen, program areas, etc.)
  • Provide a staff orientation that includes treatment procedures, specific camper health needs and medications, health center procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
  • Screen campers and staff upon arrival and departure:
    1. Verify health history, examination, and emergency authorization
    2. Conduct a health assessment
    3. Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases
  • Consult with outside medical staff as needed
  • Contact emergency services as needed
  • Oversee sanitary conditions throughout camp through observation, reporting any areas of concern to Camp Director
  • Manage youth behavior through positive reinforcement and redirection as per COA philosophy and youth work best practices.

Goal: Oversee an effective Health Center

  • Organize and maintain adequate resources and supplies
  • Ensure all items are clearly labeled
  • Maintain locked cabinet and locked refrigerator for medications
  • Correctly distribute medications to staff and campers
  • Collect and maintain information on local health resources

Compliance

Goal: Comply with ACA and COA standards

  • Follow ACA and camp policies and procedures relating to medical care
  • Create and utilize daily medical log
  • Properly document incidents/accidents
  • Provide guidance for the camp’s risk management program

Other

Actively and constructively participate as a member of the leadership team

  • Assist in planning programs, special events, etc. as it relates to health.
  • Participate in leadership and staff meetings.
  • Role model appropriate behavior at all times. This includes developing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships with colleagues, parents, facilitators, etc.
  • Contact parents concerning the status of their child’s health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc.

Qualifications

Education/Knowledge/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • CPR / First Aid certification
  • Certification or licensure in Wilderness First Aid, Emergency Responder, EMT, Paramedic, RN, MD or equivalent
  • If required: must be at least 23 years old with valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

The physical requirements are the ability to:

  • Sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time
  • Move/run, i.e., to physically engage with the youth and actively participate in programming
  • Lift and carry at least 30 pounds
  • Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities
  • Respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid - Must be able to provide leadership and assist campers and staff in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury)

The work environment is an outdoor camp environment. This means that the person will spend time out-of-doors which can mean exposure to hot, cold, rainy weather. It also involves various activities with youth requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing situations and emergencies.
