Job Title: Locomotive Mechanical Laborer

Department: Motive Power

Division: Northern Plains Railroad Reports to: Manager Motive Power

Job Status: Full Time

Schedule: Varies. M-F and may include holidays and/or weekends. 07:00-16:00 with additional hours as necessary.

Travel: may also be required as needed 30%

Pay: $27-$31/hr BOE

Summary:

The Northern Plains Railroad, Inc. (NPR) d.b.a. Northern Plains Rail Services (NPRS) and other affiliated companies Locomotive Mechanical Laborer position repairs and maintains diesel engines used to power railroad trains, using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machine tools: Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects and excessive wear. Reconditions and replaces parts, such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings, using engine lathes, boring machines, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments. May weld and cut parts, using arc-welding and flame cutting equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities are, but are not limited to:

•Perform servicing and clean-up of locomotives and work areas.

•Assist in fueling.

•Assist in various tasks, such as the removal and installation of diesel engine components, electrical components, and air brake parts.

•Assist in the performance of periodic inspections and filter changes, remove and install brake shoes and adjust brake piston travel according to company and federal standards.

•Supply sand to locomotive during servicing with forklift or crane truck.

•Supply locomotives with all necessary materials (drinking water, spare parts, etc.) with forklift or crane truck.

•Clean interiors and exteriors of locomotives.

•Spray engine parts with solvents to remove oil and grease.

•Scrape engine car body to remove grease and sludge on top of body.

•Inspect for unusual sounds, vibrations, smells, and small changes in the appearance of materials or objects.

•Clean assigned shop and service areas.

•Sweep floors and walkways.

•Empty trash.

•Clean parts and residue off floors.

•Clean engine service pits.

•Operate locomotives between various shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas; as hostler attendant line switches and operate derails.

•Perform air brake tests.

•Safely and effectively operate the following: round house turntable operated from control panel, high pressure steam cleaning equipment, specialized equipment such as locomotive cranes, sand cranes, and auto trucks, and track switches.

•Other duties as assigned by manager.

The employee is frequently required to perform manual labor & physical activities that require considerable use of the whole body, such as standing and lifting from various levels.

Environmental:

•Continuous: Works inside & outside, exposure to noise, chemicals, stand on concrete, works with others, concentration & perception. Eye/hand coordination, feet-foot pedals, dexterity with fingering-picking, pinching, using a calculator, handling-holding & grasping, wrist motion-repetitive flexion/rotation.

•Frequent: Exposure to electrical hazards, works in cramped quarters, dust & smoke, fumes, odors, grease & oil, works in hot/cold temperatures, vibration, works alone, works with moving machinery, working with interruptions.

•Occasional: Walk on uneven or slippery surface, works in wet conditions.

•Rare: Travel, on-call, exposure to toxic materials, shift work, written communications, money handling, calculating.

Education and Training:

•GED or higher.

•Have at least 6 months’ experience working on diesel engines.

•Valid driver’s license.

•Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
