Job Title: Track Maintenance Technician, Bowman Gray Stadium

Department: Winston Salem Speedway

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Track Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and appearance of the track facilities. The Track Maintenance Technician will perform routine maintenance tasks, repairs, and inspections to keep the track surface, guard rails, fencing, infrastructure, and surrounding areas in optimal condition for racing events and spectator enjoyment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections of the track surface, barriers, fencing, and surrounding infrastructure to identify any signs of wear, damage, or hazards.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning debris, repairing potholes, and patching cracks to ensure a smooth and safe racing surface.
  • Monitor track conditions during events and respond promptly to any maintenance issues or emergencies that may arise.
  • Maintain the landscaping and vegetation around the track perimeter, including mowing grass, trimming bushes, and removing weeds to enhance the visual appeal of the facility.
  • Ensure proper drainage by clearing drains, ditches, and culverts to prevent water buildup and flooding on the track surface.
  • Repair and maintain trackside structures, buildings, grandstands, and amenities such as restrooms, concession stands, and spectator seating areas.
  • Perform basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical repairs as needed to address maintenance issues and ensure the functionality of facilities.
  • Operate specialized maintenance equipment such as tractors, mowers, pressure washers, and small hand tools to perform maintenance tasks efficiently and safely.
  • Conduct regular inspections and routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning and extend service life.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing maintenance activities, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe work practices.
  • Maintain compliance with environmental regulations and guidelines for waste disposal, chemical handling, and pesticide application as applicable.
  • Coordinate with other maintenance team members, event staff, and management to prioritize tasks, address maintenance needs, and ensure efficient operations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, contractors, and vendors regarding maintenance schedules, repair projects, and supply orders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); additional technical training or certification in maintenance, landscaping, or a related field is preferred; prior experience in facility maintenance, groundskeeping, or landscaping, preferably in a sports venue or outdoor recreation facility. Familiarity with maintenance techniques, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs; Familiarity with operating and maintaining maintenance equipment and tools safely and effectively; or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must be able to read a tape measure.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS

  • Proven experience in facility maintenance, groundskeeping, or landscaping, preferably in a sports venue or outdoor recreational facility.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance techniques, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.
  • Familiarity with operating and maintaining maintenance equipment and tools safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills to identify maintenance issues and implement solutions promptly.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with the race schedule and event calendar.
  • Dependable and punctual, with a commitment to fulfilling assigned shifts and responsibilities according to the race schedule and event calendar.
