Job Objective:

The Health Officer will provide excellent Health Services for all guests and sustain a professional and encouraging atmosphere throughout our property.

Camp Dates: May through the end of July.

What You Will Do:

  • Prepare, stock and maintain the facility as a first aid station.
  • Be available, on call, monitoring the camp radio at all times when on duty.
  • Provide a secure/lockable area for medications
  • Keep the Health Office locked when unoccupied.
  • Accept and review health forms for each camper.
  • Accept and log medications for each camper.
  • Provide bracelets with relevant medical information for campers.
  • Maintain in alphabetical order camper and staff health forms.
  • Develop and maintain a log for the dispensing of medications and for all care provided to campers, staff or guests.
  • Prepare and distribute first-aid kits to counselors, program aides, life guards and others as directed. Replace supplies as used and requested.
  • Ensure the first aid kits in the camp office, kitchen, pool and ropes course are complete and remained stocked.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical supplies and notify the Camp Director of needs.
  • Accept and dispose of or clean biohazard red bag items as required.
  • During orientation assist preparation and train staff in basic first aid procedures using their first aid kits, how to administer an epi pen injection and exposure control (HAZCOM).
  • Administer basic first aid as may be required to campers, staff and guests following standard protocols established by the American Red Cross.
  • Maintain a log of all treatment provided.
  • Carry the trauma bag, water and Gatorade on the Health Officer's cart.
  • Make 9-1-1 calls as deemed necessary in case of an emergency.
  • Make recommendations for campers that need to be transported into town for Emergency room care or doctor appointments. A copy of the health form and treatment log/medication log should accompany the person being transported.
  • Request transportation for campers, staff or guests as may be required. The Health Officer is to remain on grounds.
  • All medications are to be received in original containers only and dispensed by the instructions on the bottle. Medications are to be kept secured in the Health Office or in the locked container on the Health Officer's cart. Only inhalers and in some cases epi pens may be given to campers/cabin counselors with written instructions as to their use provided no other camper has access.
  • A medication schedule for dispensing prescription medications and over the counter drugs will be developed. All items dispensed will be logged.
  • Typically, medications are dispensed at meal times. Evening (bedtime) medications will be dispensed at the end of Call to the Cross.
  • Assist in maintaining the water stations throughout the camp by replacing water coolers and cups regularly.
  • Encourage campers and staff members to remain hydrated throughout the day, watching for signs of dehydration, especially on high temperature days
  • Prepare to return all medications to the Corps Officer, van driver or parent of campers. A description or copy of the medication log for that person should accompany the medications returned.
  • If an Rx bottle is empty, return it. Do not dispose of it at camp.
  • Participate in camper activities and be available to assist counselors and other staff when needed.
  • As possible participate in staff meetings, evaluation sessions and devotion times.
  • Comply with camp policies.
  • Observe the spiritual emphasis of camp.
  • Keep living quarters clean and neat at all times.
  • Practice courtesy in sharing living space with other camp staff members.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Participate in staff meetings, evaluation sessions and devotion times.
  • Must carry radio while camp is in session on your person.
  • Other tasks as assigned by Leadership.

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Be a High School Student or above

Background Checks: This position will require a background check to be completed and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Must be at least age 18.

Certifications: Must hold certification for First Aid, CPR, and AED. Must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 30 days of employment. Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be a Christian who demonstrates the principles of Christian living.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision maintaining attention to detail.
  • Able to handle stressful situations with calm and efficiency.
  • Ability to manage time well in order to accomplish multiple tasks by a set schedule.
  • Able to relate God to campers in the natural setting of camp.
  • Able to guide, direct, and supervise duties and responsibilities of other staff members as assigned.
  • Able to communicate well with other staff, campers and supervisors

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises the health needs of campers.

Physical Requirements Include:

  • Able to walk for extended periods of time and across uneven terrain.
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting materials up to 25 pounds and carry it for at least 50 feet.
  • Be physically fit enough to keep up with daily camp activities.

Travel: Position may require occasional local travel, including the use of camp vehicles across the camp property.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a residential camp setting; Work will be expected at varying and flexible times, including overnight and some scheduled weekends.
