The Hinckley Company, known for building and servicing, strong, seaworthy and beautiful yachts is seeking an experienced Carpenter for our production facility in Trenton, Maine.


Essential Duties

1. Transfer dimensions to marine plywood and other construction materials using tape measure, square and marking/layout devices.

2. Make accurate cuts of wood and other materials using table and chop saws and other related power tools.

3. Skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints.

4. Layout, cut and assemble boat parts, such as doors, paneling, boxes, rails, and trim.

5. Good working knowledge of most woodworking joints in the marine industry, such as scarf, sill splice, lap, finger, and dovetail.

6 Skilled knowledge and use of epoxies and vinyl ester resins or other adhesives to bond parts.

7. Understands yachting terminology, local and industry, e.g., port/starboard, gump (trim molding) and bung (wood plug).

8. Use reading and writing, adding and subtracting of whole numbers and fractions.

9. Follow defined instructions and procedures in performance of tasks.

10. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean work area.

11. All work to be performed and manufactured to Hinckley quality standards.

12. Perform other related duties as necessary.



  1. High school or general equivalency degree (GED) required.
  2. Course work in wood and/or metals preferred.
  3. Knowledge, operation, and set-up of tape measure, square, hand saw, hand plane, table saw, and chop saw, planer, joiner, band saw, shaper, surface sander, and router.
  4. Twelve (12) months carpentry, plus 2 years boatbuilding experience which may be attained on-the-job and by company training.

Physical Requirements

  1. Lift and carry over 60 lbs. on an occasional basis (over 15% and up to 40%).
  2. Requires moderate physical demand, occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight material and working in difficult work positions.
  3. Requires continuous mental and visual attention on an intermittent basis.
  4. Must be able to lift, bend, kneel, stoop, push and pull.
  5. Requires working under disagreeable conditions on a frequent basis where elements such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, cold, vibration, noise, water, or chemicals may be present.
