Title: Summer Food Program Assistant

Pay: $21/hour ($23/hr if fully bilingual in Spanish and English)

Seasonal Position: 5/23/24-8/22/24

Schedule: Training weeks 5/23/24-6/6/24 1-2X after school trainings each week; Program Weeks 6/10/24-8/22/24: Mondays & Wednesdays 8am-3pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am-3pm

Job Summary:

The Summer Food Program Assistant (SFPA) is a seasonal support position to our summer programs. The ideal candidate should be personable and have a passion for working with youth of various backgrounds. The SFPA will support the Summer Food Program: a safe, engaging and fun environment for children of all ages to access nutritious lunches at multiple sites throughout Blaine County. The SFPA will work alongside the Community Kitchen Team and the SFP team to prepare and serve these lunches, as well as support community partner enrichment activities. The SFPA reports directly to the Bloom Youth Project Supervisor.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

• Is fluently bilingual in Spanish/English, with the ability to communicate clearly in both languages.
• Is at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license and safe driving record
• Has personal experience with food insecurity or a commitment to social justice and/or community service through previous employment and/or volunteer experience.
• Works well with persons of varied sexual orientation, gender identity, racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, and with individuals who are differently-abled.
• Is willing to embrace and work to improve a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion, which is central to the work we do.
• Enjoys engaging, educating, feeding and building community with children and families
• Has a positive, problem-solving attitude and can show up professionally, on time and reliably.
• Is able to work outdoors in moderately adverse weather and able to lift 40 pounds, comfortable driving large vans.
• Is able to pass a national background check.
• CPR certification & Child Abuse Prevention preferred, but can obtain training once employed

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Food Preparation

• Follow all food safety rules when working with the food prep team in the Kitchen
• Work with the food prep team to prepare hundreds of lunches two mornings each week
• Follow food prep task lists and flow to ensure efficiency and quality
• Provide guidance to volunteers and youth staff in these work areas
• Wash dishes and put them away
• Summer Food Program Locations Oversight

Summer Food Program Sites

• Load and unload van with engagement materials and food
• Serve lunch to youth and adults at the sites, acting as an ambassador for The Hunger Coalition
• Ensure Youth assistants, employed by The Hunger Coalition, are given excellent examples of safe, efficient, and fun programming, have opportunities to improve program aspects and to practice leadership skills.
• Safely drive and deliver meals to the SFP site, ensuring all vehicle safety and food safety rules are met throughout; gas vehicle as needed
• Work with partners to implement fun, engaging, age-appropriate activities for children and families.
• Maintain a clean and organized environment at the park and in the van storage area.
• Mentor children by being a role model, involving them in clean up and activities, and talking with them to create a respectful community environment.
• Immediately report any safety issues or concerns for a child’s safety to the Bloom Youth Project Supervisor.
