Salary: $24 - $28/ hour
Basic Purpose and Function:
This skilled position is responsible for installations, repair wirings, fixtures, and equipment for all electrical services aboard ships and in shipyard facilities while following blueprints and wiring diagrams.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, determine the operating errors' root causes and fixes the errors.
- Repairs controllers, internal components, or systems using job-specific tools.
- Identifies complex problems and reviews related information to develop, evaluate, and implement solutions.
- Observes gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure machines are functioning correctly.
- Determines how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
- Visually discriminate color, specifically, match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
- Understands electrical machines and tools, including their use, repair, and maintenance.
- Understands various power applications and how to connect equipment safely.
- Understands the various voltages & amperages explicitly used in marine settings.
- Understands and works with both Alternating Current and Direct Current systems.
- Works at all height levels (high and low).
- Works in confined and enclosed spaces.
- Works in inclement weather conditions.
- Works non-standard work hours, as required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Education and Experience:
- Applicants with three (3+) years of maritime electrical experience preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
- General knowledge of blueprints preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical machines and tools, including their use, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote security for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
- Candidates must be able to pass a qualification test prior to being considered for hire.
- Should have a working knowledge of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Standard Items.
- Working knowledge of local NAVSEA Standard Items, specifically Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC).
Major Responsibility (Functions/Duties):
- Pulls fasteners and cables through cableways and devices, such as connection boxes, circuit breakers, voltage regulators and power panels.
- Strips insulation from wires and solders ends to terminals using stripping pliers and soldering iron.
- Connects power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment.
- Tests electrical characteristics, such as voltage, and resistance, keep in circuits using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators.
- Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures based on job specifications and local codes.
- Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
- Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
- Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustments or repairs and ensures compliance with codes.
- Diagnoses malfunctioning systems or components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
- Works from ladders, scaffolds, or Aerial Work Platform (AWP) to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures.
- Must be able to work in confined and enclosed spaces
- Repairs or replaces wiring, equipment, and fixtures using hand tools or power tools.
- Assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools.
- Pulls, routes, and bands cables.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Understands and follows Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
- Understands and follows the Work Authorization (WAF) process.
- Must follow all Hot Work procedures.
