Summary:

The Vice President, Planned Giving is responsible for setting the strategy for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's planned giving program, enabling fundraising goals aligned with the organization's strategic plan and fostering a culture of philanthropy within the organization. The Vice President leads planning giving strategy and execution and works in close partnership with peer Vice Presidents overseeing other individual donor programs in Direct Response, Major Giving, and Principal Giving to maximize coordination and increase LLS's portfolio of giving.

The Vice President provides oversight of the acquisition and cultivation of planned giving donors, portfolio management, establishment and execution of gift vehicles, management of the LLS legacy circle, and training/coaching of staff across the Revenue Department and Territory teams. The Vice President will provide leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to a team of planned giving officers (directors?) and to donor account leaders to build relationships and partnerships with donors that can lead to a pipeline of legacy gifts and various gift planning vehicles to increase current and future giving to LLS.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy

  • Create and lead LLS's planned giving program strategy to enable an annual fundraising goal supporting the LLS 3-5 year revenue and organizational strategy.
  • Partner with the Chief Advancement Officer, Vice President Advancement, Principal Gift Officers, and Vice President Direct-to-Constituent to design, implement and integrate strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, steward, and solicit planned giving donors.
  • Partner with the Advancement Leadership and Territory Leadership to set transparent performance indicators and analyze metrics for the Planned Giving Team and Territory Teams.
  • Partner with the Vice President Advancement to ensure the Territory Advancement Directors and Territory Planned Giving Officers are aligned with the Planned Giving strategic objectives to consult with Territory and Region leadership and advancement staff.
  • Oversee the marketing strategy for planned gifts including newsletters, direct-mail promotions, brochures, website, and Legacy Circle in partnership with Advancement Operations, Direct-to-Constituent and Constituent Experience teams.
  • Recommend strategies for growing planned giving program through training region staff and volunteers, and marketing planned gifts to volunteers, staff, and donors.

Management of Planned Giving Program

  • Respond to prospect inquires, regarding bequests, stock gifts, and planned gifts, including real or personal property, insurance, and trusts. Prepare gift annuity and trust illustrations, communicate with prospects and donors, financial advisors, territories, and regions, and accurately book gifts in partnership with Advancement Operations. File required state registrations.
  • Handle probate administration including communicating with attorneys, trust officers, executors, and regions.
  • Maintain a portfolio of planned and blended gift donors and prospects. Work in partnership with the Advancement Operations team to ensure engagement, stewardship, and cultivation of identified donors. Respond to bequest inquires generated by direct mail, Freewill, Market Smart, and other marketing activities.
  • Lead the Territory Planned Giving Directors to collaborate with the Principal Gift Officers, Territory Advancement Directors, Territory and Region Executive Directors, and Region Advancement staff toreview individual prospects and donors identified as planned and blended gift prospects.
  • Conduct regular meetings with the Territory Planned Giving Directors, and all other appropriate Territory colleagues to educate on planned and blended giving opportunities across the organization in partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer and Vice President Advancement. Partner with the Territory leadership to present to regional Boards to educate on panned giving and leverage relationships to secure planned and blended gifts.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors for planned giving products including our investment advisor, annuity consultant, and legal counsel and ensure proper and timely income payments.
  • Ensure all planned giving activities are inputted and updated in LLS's customer relationship management (CRM) system. Monitor planned giving activities within the CRM from the territory and region teams with the Territory Planned Giving Officers to analyze program metrics.
  • Lead LLS's Planning Giving team participation at internal and external conferences and summits in partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer and Revenue Leadership.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 7-10 years of leadership and management experience in planned giving and/or high-net-worth major giving.
  • Legal, brokerage or insurance background preferred.
  • Experience building fundraising programs and leading teams.

Position Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to mentor, coach and manage highly functioning teams across a complex organization.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite and database software.
  • Able to communicate financial matters in a mature style and understandable manner with donors and advisors across a wide range of financial sophistication.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex legal and financial documents.

  • The average salary range is $150,000 - $185,000, open to further discussion based on geography
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally to team and industry meetings/conferences.
