Job Description

Under general supervision, performs mechanical repair work to maintain diesel equipment by completing inspection and preventive maintenance requirements, correcting vehicle deficiencies, making adjustments and alignments, and keeping records. Work involves diagnosing and repairing hydraulic mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical systems of diesel applications; performing preventative maintenance routine inspections of Town diesel applications; and maintaining proper and safe operation of Town heavy duty equipment and emergency vehicles.

Job Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses vehicle problems related to pneumatic, mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical failure, including repairing or replacing engines, fuel systems, electronic engine controls, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, computer systems, drive trains, differentials, hydraulics, gear boxes, etc. within manufacturers guidelines to ensure overall quality and safety at all times.
  • Repairs vehicle problems based on diagnosis.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and routine inspections in accordance with regulations; makes repairs if necessary, including changing oil, lubricating, replacing hoses and belts, replacing brakes, checking lights, and tuning engines.
  • Researches most “cost effective” way to replace or repair problem(s).
  • Informs supervisor and documents findings and/or repairs.
  • Maintains clean and safe working conditions per Town and OSHA regulations.
  • Communicates with various drivers and/or operators to understand vehicle or equipment failures.
  • Orders appropriate parts and supplies to correctly fix repairs.
  • Documents and maintains invoices and work orders for future reference.
  • Performs test drive on trucks and equipment to verify repairs were done properly.
  • May be required to perform welding and fabrication work including stainless pipe welding work, aluminum welding, etc.
  • Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such as invoice, driver/operator request, service/parts manual, work order history, schematics, etc.).
  • Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation (such as work orders, credits, invoices, purchase orders, part drawings, etc.).
  • Refers to vehicle general information, service manuals, service bulletins, Internet, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery (such as heavy-duty equipment, overhead crane, forklift, pressure washer, computer, etc.).
  • Uses a variety of tools (such as hand tools, pneumatic tools, jack / jack stands, chemicals, welders, portable truck lifts, etc.); a variety of supplies (such as rags, replacement parts, general office supplies, etc.); and a variety of computer software (such as IDS, ISIS, VCAD, Insight, Internet Explorer, etc.).
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Fleet Maintenance Manager, other Town employees, sales representatives, coworkers, and the general public).
  • Transports vehicles and/or equipment from the yard to the shop.
  • Cleans or pressure wash systems before service or repair.
  • Performs part pickups.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, prefer a technical college diploma, supplemented by ten (10+) plus years’ experience in heavy trucks and equipment repair, diesel engines used in power generation and agricultural machinery repair and working with electrical diagnostic equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license. Must have experience with hydraulics and pneumatics. May require possession of a commercial driver’s license (A, B, or C with specific endorsements).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Heavy Duty Technician II -

  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Vehicle Maintenance Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Heavy Duty Service Technician.
  • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy equipment, light equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
  • Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions, including exposure to heat/cold, wetness, humidity, dusts, dirt, machinery hazards, vibrations, noise, odors, smoke, electrical currents, toxic agents, etc.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions as required.
  • Ability to prepare required records and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to offer assistance to fellow employees as necessary.
  • Ability to provide instruction and leadership to assistants as assigned.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a truck, welding machine, drill press, back hoe, wrecker, mechanical, welding, machine tools, automotive test equipment, etc. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
