Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) K-4 driving print out is required to be submitted for consideration.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general supervision, performs complete mechanical repairs, maintenance, installation of equipment and servicing district buses and automobiles maintained by the district.

Mechanic is classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Transportation Administrative (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot engine in the fleet with updated equipment and data information systems available.
  • Proficiently remove and install engines, transmissions, rear axle units and all auxiliary units, including windows.
  • Diagnose and repair braking, steering mechanism, axle units, wheelchair lifts, hydraulic, heating, electrical, chassis, and suspension components.
  • Comprehend procedures, read electrical schematics, repair faults, cell and battery diagnostics and replacements.
  • Perform field or shop inspections of buses or district vehicles to determine repair needs/or estimate costs of repairs.
  • Conducts repairs of disabled buses or vehicles in the field, if and when possible.
  • Performs other related duties as needed or required.
QUALIFICATIONS

The following are the minimum qualifications, which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position:

  • Combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of High School; High School Diploma or GED.
  • Course work in auto, truck and/or fleet mechanics. 3 recent years of experience as a mechanic in automotive; preferably in heavy equipment and fleet repair.
  • Knowledge of method, practices, materials and tools used in repair and maintenance of automotive and fleet equipment
  • Knowledge of various types of diesel powered and gasoline powered automotive drive trains.
  • Principals and techniques servicing air brakes, vehicular hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Operate and test repair equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical principles and practices of automotive repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Operate desktop computer to obtain information on available parts and other work related information.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with fellow co-workers and the general public.
  • Abide by all rules and regulations outlined in employee handbook.
  • Valid Class B Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement or the ability to obtain one is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS

In general, the following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

ENVIRONMENT

Works with exposure to outdoor conditions in maintenance yard/garage environment. May be required to drive buses or district vehicles/equipment to various locations, such as, public city streets, maintenance, and facilities areas within conducting district business. Physical – Hearing and Speaking sufficient to articulate information in person, meetings, and telephone. Vision within normal range with or without correction; sitting, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, lying down, twisting, balancing, reaching, steering, neck, mobility. Ability to push, lift, carry, and pull up to 50 lbs. Manipulates hands, fingers, and wrists to handle, feel, grasp, or operate tools, parts, controls, and equipment; standing for extended periods of time, walking on uneven surfaces; uses hands to handle, feel and operate standard office equipment including work assigned computer, mental capability to use or apply analytical reasoning and concepts, read and interpret documents. Hazards – Exposure to traffic, fumes, dust, dirt, heights, noise, fumes, from oil, gas, diesel fuel, diesel, cleaning solvents.

DEMONSTRATED DRIVING RECORD

You will need to submit a copy of your DMV printout (this is called a “K-4” California Driver’s History Record). Your record must not have a citation for reckless driving or a citation related to driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol within 10 years of hire. Your DMV record must not have a combination of more than two citations and/or at fault accidents within the last 3 years. PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

The process includes a job specific pre-employment physical and drug screening to be completed by an industrial health clinic of MTD’s choice; criminal background and references will also be performed. All offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of the pre-employment process.
