JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State College of Engineering is searching for an Experimental Machinist (CNC) to join their team. Duties include:
  • Working from drawings, prints, rough sketches, verbal instructions, and own design; fabricate and construct a variety of shapes composed of steel, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and other exotic materials
  • Perform a variety of machining operations to very high tolerances using lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses and other miscellaneous shop equipment, with minimum supervision
  • Program CNC machines, including both lathe and mills
  • Use DOS operating system to store programs, use editing programs to change data for CNC Machines
  • Construct geometry from blue print or CAD input with CAM software to produce CNC programs
  • Set-up and operate computerized numerically controlled equipment (CNC) using basic programming techniques
  • Facilitate changes to existing programs through the use of Manual Input (MDI)
  • Assist and train other Machinists with the programming for CNC machines utilizing personal computers
  • Perform a variety of metal fusion operations utilizing silver and soft soldering, brazing, arc, inert gas, oxygen-acetylene, and spot welding on typical and exotic metals
  • Discuss, advise and work closely with faculty, staff and students on the feasibility, design material modification, and construction of experimental equipment and instruments
  • Assist personnel concerning rebuilding of used apparatus for research and laboratory projects pertaining to job assigned by supervisor
  • Working from prints and/or verbal instructions, plus own design, layout and perform a variety of carpentry techniques using various hand and power tools, such as radial saws, routers and senders; nail, glue, and screw together; prepare surfaces and apply wood finishes such as paint, stain and/or varnish
  • Maintain equipment in proper working conditions by cleaning, lubricating and repairing breakdowns
  • Report equipment deficiencies to supervisor
  • Working from prints and/or verbal instructions, plus own design, layout and perform a variety of sheet metal fabrications; shear/or saw sheet metal to proper shape; bend sheet metal to shape by hand, power brake rolls or other conventional sheet metal equipment
  • Oversee student shop including; giving safety orientation, basic machining instructions, inventory of small tools and material, and general maintenance of student shop equipment
  • Responsible for safety of students working in student shop when scheduled
  • Working from prints and/or verbal instructions, plus own design, layout and perform a variety of plastic work, such as cutting to proper shapes, bending, molding and gluing
  • Polish and/or buff plastic surfaces
  • Operate University vehicle for pick up or delivery of projects or supplies as required
  • Perform incidental plumbing and electrical work associated with laboratory research work
  • Perform and assist in a variety of fiberglass work, and construct molds required for this work
  • Report and document safety violations that would occur during working hours to the Shop Supervisor
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition; take inventories as required


Job Requirements: Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, all varieties of adjustable measuring instruments and the use of broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or equivalent to high school plus a 2-year technical college education. 4 to 5 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Days Off: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
