Are you driven by safety, service, and opportunity? Then considering joining VDOT’s Bridge Inspection Team. The Richmond District is seeking an Inspector Structure & Bridge to help keep Virginia moving!

As an Inspector Structure & Bridge you will assist with in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage, and defects.

Core responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Collect structural data and dimensions of components. Prepare and distribute structural inspection reports and related documentation.
• Assist with the creation of new inventory records and update existing structure inventory and assessment data in automated database systems.
• Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment.
• Operate specialized inspection equipment and vehicles

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of common bridge types and components
• Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to bridges and structures
• Ability to prepare and/or draft structural drawings and sketches
• Ability to use specialized inspection instruments and tools
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications
• Ability to follow safety practices and procedures and use required equipment
• Ability to prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files
• Valid Driver’s license.

Additional Considerations

• Completion of an FHWA-approved course in safety inspection of in-service bridges
• A combination of training, experience or education in Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field desired.
• Experience using a PC to prepare reports, enter data and maintain databases and files
• Proficiency in the use of MS Office and CAD
• Experience in bridge maintenance and repair or structural inspection.
