Drives and coordinates the execution of strategic projects, and optimization of implemented solutions. Researches, analyzes, and provides recommendations to enhance our value proposition to major external and internal stakeholders and customers. Ensures underwriting programs are best in class, and that adequate insight into the data allows proper governance of new business written. Communicates critical and key project information to all internal and external stakeholders, as well as research and advocates for innovative and continuous improvements based on findings.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages complex projects (cross-functional, multi-phase, multi-system projects of significant financial impact and urgency), primarily focused on underwriting and strategic business partnerships for EMCNL through to successful completion. Defines roles, responsibilities, and expectations clearly to ensure appropriate accountability

  • Leads project teams in the development and implementation of detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and cost-benefit analysis, while providing direction, communication and status reporting

  • Monitors and coordinates the collection of information, inventory process, and analysis involved with the portfolio of corporate level projects

  • Recommends categorization and prioritization of assigned projects and acts as the liaison with internal and external IT partners on solution specifications and solution testing

  • Communicates critical and key project information timely, such as status, technical issues, dependencies, and proposed innovation and culture change projects, to major stakeholders, including executive leadership, department managers, team members, and external stakeholders

  • Manages the data analysis and risk assessment program of business written. Coordinates with Underwriting management, Actuary and Claims teams to obtain key information necessary to perform risk assessments

  • Develops data analytics and identifies trends in the business, focusing on underwriting risk management

  • Evaluates existing and new underwriting program features, such as application questions, data sources, data models, and deployment technology

  • Identifies and reports opportunities and threats to support improvement of the quality of our business to senior leadership

  • Proactively identifies, researches, recommends, and implements process improvements for New Business and Underwriting departments

  • Analyzes existing processes or system requests and develops corresponding recommendations for changes

  • Leads the competitive evaluation of external business market solutions and engages with existing and potential new business partners to support business growth, internal process efficiency, and customer experience enhancements

  • Identifies opportunities, recommends improvements, and leads the implementation of new solutions

  • Actively monitors market developments and innovations related to new business acquisition and underwriting, and reports findings to EMCNL leadership

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance risk management, health related field or equivalent relevant experience

  • Ten years of progressive experience in life underwriting, including three years in project management or related experience

  • Life insurance certifications, such as FLMI, FALU, PMP preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge of life insurance underwriting

  • Excellent data sources, data and predictive analytics, distribution partners and technology preferred

  • Excellent knowledge of insurance products and practices with the ability to comprehend and react to regulatory changes preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a cooperative work environment

  • Excellent knowledge of computer and automated underwriting systems, programs, and research techniques

  • Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including customer service skills

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
