JOB SUMMARY

Under regular supervision, performs skilled labor in the maintenance of Town ballfields, playgrounds and related facilities. Work involves operating equipment, performing litter control, cleaning facilities, landscaping, and performing other grounds activities. Requires overtime.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs skilled labor in the performance of setting field to proper measurements on set days.
  • Prepares athletic fields to ensure that grade level on all playing surfaces is free of holes and there is no water on field.
  • Ensures all fields are safe and free of hazardous conditions.
  • Ensures that all field equipment is in proper working condition (such as bases, pitcher’s mound, etc.).
  • Sets, repairs, and installs irrigation system.
  • Checks fences; repairs or installs when needed.
  • Moves bleachers as needed; ensures the safe condition of all bleachers at each field.
  • Installs and maintains playground equipment, irrigation systems, and other equipment.
  • Performs various painting activities.
  • Performs masonry and carpentry work (such as floor replacement, etc.).
  • Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such as schedules for baseball and softball tournaments).
  • Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated with department operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; reviews various documentation for accuracy and completeness; and distributes/issues various documentation.
  • Refers to policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and machinery (such as three- and four-wheel vehicles, bucket truck, etc).
  • Uses a variety of tools (such as roller, heavy drag matt, gas operated tamper, battery operated paint machine, etc.); and a variety of supplies (such as clay, field marking paint, quick dry, mound repair clay, field chalk, etc.).
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Crew Leader – Athletic Field, Recreation Specialist, coworkers, other Town employees, coaches/players, and the general public).
  • Assists in unloading refreshment and food supply trucks; stocks concession stand.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by at least one year of practical training and experience preparing athletic grounds for play; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess valid South Carolina driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Athletic Field Technician.
  • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping methods, tools and equipment; skill in landscape installation and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of and skill in irrigation system installation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of athletic maintenance and repair work and is able to assist in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of parks and recreation system components.
  • Knowledge of the machinery, materials and supplies required for daily maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Skill in carpentry and masonry.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles and equipment with safety.
  • Ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to heat/cold, odors, toxic agents/hazardous materials, noise, wetness, humidity, machinery hazards, dusts, vibrations, traversing uneven terrain, etc.
  • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to prepare simple records and reports with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics tools, carpenters tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, shovels, rakes, etc. Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
