Barn Manager

The Barn Manager is responsible for the care and maintenance of all animals and animal-related facilities owned by MCHS.  This position is also responsible for the creation and implementation of animal and equestrian programming. The Barn Manager will oversee the recruitment, care, and training of the horses, work collaboratively with staff to train and support volunteers in working with the horses, and partner with the Director of The Fowler Center to manage the maintenance of the barn and its related facilities.

  • Ongoing assessment of animals for the animal programs to include recruitment and retirement, evaluation of animal’s overall suitability for use in the program, as well as designation of animal use within the programs.
  • Creation and development of equestrian and animal programs for camp sessions as well as community activities and events.
  • Daily and routine maintenance of animal care facilities such as manure management, trough management, pasture rotation management, fence line management, etc.
  • Manage all aspects of maintenance and upkeep of animal areas including stalls, tack room, pastures, indoor arena, paddocks, equipment sheds, animal shelters, etc.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Must have knowledge of basic animal first aid and be able to recognize signs of illness (colic, lameness, bloat, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the benefits of equine assisted services for individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric fence repair and maintenance including supplies and equipment involved preferred.
  • Strong staff and team management skills.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Manage time and multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Complete assigned tasks in an efficient and effective manner.

 Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years’ experience of barn management in a camp environment or with adaptive horsemanship preferred.
  • Prefer 2 years minimum experience staff management.
  • Preferred certification through CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) or PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) or willingness to obtain either certification.
  • Current first aid and CPR certification.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record that is acceptable and meets the requirements of the agency’s insurance carrier.
