Commitment to Citizen Service

Service encompasses all aspects of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indian’s governmental operations. Every employee shares the responsibility to provide exemplary service, dignity, and respect to all Tribal Citizens, the Tribal Council, and staff members. To this end, all employees have an obligation to identify and report any service problems, issues, or concerns and through designated channels, initiate, recommend, and actively participate in solutions.

Position Summary: Assist with the examination and treatment of clients by completing various duties under the direction of the attending physician. Provide coverage for all Pokagon Health Services clinics at various locations.

Essential Functions:

  • Greet and welcome clients either on the telephone or in-person; escort clients to the examination and treatment rooms, or alternate waiting area.
  • Optimize client care, provider time, and exam and treatment utilization by triaging client phone calls and visits.
  • Organize examination area by checking the schedule, preparing rooms, and arranging exam equipment and supplies.
  • Provide information for examinations by interviewing clients, measuring vital signs, obtaining chief complaint and medical history when appropriate, and recording information in clients’ charts.
  • Assist medical provider to complete care by requesting and receiving medical records, operating diagnostic and screening equipment, performing routine lab tests, giving injections and treatments, and obtaining releases of information.
  • Conserve resources by assisting clients to complete alternate resource applications for medical supplies, prescriptions, and related medical care goods and services.
  • Maintain medical records by entering data into the computer and chart.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; adhere to infection control policies and protocols; clean and package equipment for sterilization.
  • Maintain clinical supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders, and verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Protect operations and clients’ rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Fill-in at the front desk, when necessary.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment.
  • Systems used: MS Office Applications, Internet, and EMR (Electronic Medical Records).

Position Requirements:

  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant training or successful completion of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from an accredited institution whose program of study has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.
  • One (1) year of experience as a medical assistant preferred.
  • Strong delivery of positive service and good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to speak effectively and respond to questions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature and will frequently require sitting, however standing and walking will occasionally be necessary.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment.
  • Frequently required to talk and hear.

Work Environment:

  • Work in well-lighted, heated, air-conditioned building.
  • May be exposed to blood, body tissue and fluids as well as hazardous substances/chemicals.
  • Exposure to noise of agitated patients, significant work pace/pressure.
  • Local travel is necessary, so the ability to travel as needed is required. This position will staff all sites including Dowagiac, New Buffalo, Hartford, and South Bend.
