SEASONAL PARKS & MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT

Public Works/Parks

Under the direction of the Public Works Director, performs necessary construction and maintenance tasks within the Parks, Trails, Buildings, and other facilities as assigned.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Performs general Park maintenance, litter, and debris clean up, weed control and a variety of construction and maintenance tasks pertaining to grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, fertilizing, seeding, raking, leveling, sprinkler systems, and general maintenance in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs skill trades in maintaining or constructing Park structures and features within Parks to include one or more of the following: carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and concrete or asphalt work, builds and repairs fences, benches, pours concrete and patches and seals asphalt.
  • Inspects the Parks facilities regularly to identify maintenance projects for submittal, with proposed solutions; monitor safety practices within the Parks, including safety practices of staff and volunteers.
  • Cleans and maintains parks, parkways, restrooms, parking lots, pavilions, picnic areas, fish cleaning stations, and boat docks; inspects for hazards and needed repairs; cleans up body fluid and bio-hazard spills when necessary.
  • Removes trash from County grounds and clears other public areas such as parking lots and sidewalks of ice, snow, or debris.
  • Prepares facilities for scheduled events and activities; assists in opening and closing parks and associated facilities as needed on weekends, holidays, and during evening hours; inspects park facilities for cleanliness and damage after events have concluded.
  • Operates a variety of light equipment including tractor, trencher, riding lawn mower, forklift, lawn edger, chain saw, etc.; assists in equipment maintenance, makes minor repairs, monitors and reports overall equipment performance; drives or transports equipment by trailer to various job sites.
  • Pressure washes picnic tables, pavilion floors, etc.; cleans park restrooms including floors, mirrors, toilets, and sinks; restocks toilet paper, soap, and air fresheners.
  • Ensures needed tools and equipment are available and used safely and according to departmental policy; provides training and instruction in a broad array of park maintenance and construction activities.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Basic knowledge of landscape maintenance operations and associated tools and equipment, sprinkler systems, and general types of vegetation; knowledge of procedures and techniques for operating vehicles and equipment.

Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to construction and maintenance work, equipment and vehicle and snow removal; preventative maintenance techniques.

Use common and specialized tools and equipment normally required to perform Park construction tasks and maintenance functions. Ability to thoroughly inspect equipment and accessories prior to operation, to ensure proper operating conditions; read, understand and follow safety rules and regulations.

Skill in operating a forklift, other motorized equipment, and various hand, pneumatic, and power tools.

Knowledge of body fluid and bio-hazard cleanup procedures.

Ability to make-a-decision or solve a problem by using logic.

Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work activities; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; understand and follow clear work instructions; distill relevant and useful elements from vast amounts of information.

Ability to promote a positive attitude, and motivate peers to work as a team.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Ability to be on-call as needed

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 80 pounds.

Work is performed in environmentally controlled and partially environmentally controlled buildings and work is regularly performed for sustained periods outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather; work is regularly performed in noisy places; exposes incumbent to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery; requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.; and work exposes incumbent to unknown, dangerous, and/or life-threatening conditions.

Work exposes incumbent to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and noise; exposes the incumbent to hazardous chemicals, and to hazards in the cleanup of body fluids and other biological hazards.

Work may require a varying schedule to accommodate department and event schedules.
