Besse Forest Products Group, headquartered in Gladstone, MI, is one of the leading producers of hardwood lumber, veneer, and plywood in North America operating four sawmills, lumber concentration yard, three veneer mills, one plywood plant, and employs over 350 personnel.

We are currently seeking a dedicated Log Yard Operator to join our Rice Lake, WI location.

Summary:

As a Log Yard Operator, you will be responsible for overseeing the efficient receipt, storage, and dispatch of a wide variety of logs in our yard. You will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of our log handling processes, maintaining the quality of the logs, and supporting the overall objectives of our forestry operations. The ideal candidate will be safety-minded, physically fit, and capable of operating heavy machinery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy machinery such as a John Deer forwarder, front-end loaders, and other log handling equipment to move, sort, and stack logs.
  • Inspect logs for quality upon receipt and sort them according to species, size, and quality.
  • Maintain accurate records of log inventories, including quantities, types, and locations in the yard.
  • Coordinate with the plant manager and other staff to optimize the storage and flow of logs in the yard.
  • Conduct regular maintenance checks on equipment and machinery, reporting any faults or issues to the maintenance team.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe work environment for all employees.
  • Assist in the training of new employees on equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Be available for flexible shifts, including weekends and evenings, as required by the operational needs of the log yard.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in heavy machinery operation is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a log yard operator or in a similar role involving heavy equipment operation.
  • Strong understanding of log species, qualities, and handling techniques.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and work in various weather conditions.
  • A commitment to safety and environmental regulations.
