Job Description

Job Purpose: This primary responsibility for the Commercial Lines Underwriter is to analyze, appraise and determine exposure and acceptable risks for business and to determine coverage and premium that are both adequate and competitive. The position's focus is to build strong relationships with commercial lines agents to identify and write new commercial lines accounts, as well as to retain profitable renewal business


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes exposure based on risk, collects underwriting information when needed, evaluates and prices quotes submitted by agents to select risks that are acceptable according to Risk Guidelines.
  • Underwrites and prices renewals, new business and endorsement changes.
  • Reviews and revises coverage forms when appropriate and acts as an insurance resource for agents.
  • Participates on a team consisting of underwriting, claims, risk evaluation and accounting to service agents
  • Negotiates pricing and coverage options with agents.
  • Builds successful relationships with agents, helping them retain and write acceptable and profitable business.
  • Works with Agraria Insurance Company staff to ensure quote and policy information is entered correctly into the system.
  • Works on special projects as needed, including the testing and analyzing of the compatibility of a new computer system.
  • Maintain written procedures for various job functions.
  • Ensure security, integrity and confidentiality of data.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to pay attention to details.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Good oral and written communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • CPCU or IIA certifications preferred.
  • Ability to become familiar with and demonstrate an understanding of additional underwriting resource material such as ISO manual, IRMI, Best Hazard Guide and other insurance referral publications.
  • Proficient in MS Office Product.

Education and Experience Required:


  • Minimum of one-year commercial underwriting experience preferred, but willing to train.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or comparable industry experience.
