Title: Sports Instructor

Position Type: Part-time (Hourly)

Locations: Charlestown, Chinatown, Dorchester, East Boston, Boston, Hyde Park, Needham, Oak Square, Reading, Roxbury, Waltham, West Roxbury, Woburn

Position Summary:

The YMCA of Greater Boston is searching for a sports instructor to lead a group of children ages 3 to 14 instructing sports classes. Classes are on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings. Candidate must possess excellent child/parent communication skills, expertise in a variety of sports and the ability to work independently.

Education & Experience:

  • One to two years related experience preferred; for example, as an sports coach or volunteer.
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens, commercial driver’s license.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent public relations and conflict resolution skills in order to facilitate positive relationships with parents, staff, children, and outside agencies.
  • Have a concern for detail and accuracy and have the ability to delegate responsibility.

Qualities Needed:

  • Energetic, motivated and well organized individual who has a passion for children and sports.

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruits, trains, and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Works with Regional Sports Director to ensure proper maintenance of gymnasium, and all related equipment.
  • Ensures the development of a sports program schedule seasonally with season sports calendar reflecting in age-appropriate activities & leagues for children.
  • Works to expand our Youth Development Initiative to serve pre-teens and teens and manage Teen Space for maximum usage. Works with Regional Sports Director to ensure this function is met.
  • Markets and distributes program information to YMCA members and the community.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements innovative programming for ages beginning at 2 to adult.
  • To be seen as a leader for our Y by engaging with families, children and other Y employees. Direct service with delivering of classes is an essential function.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Assists with program committee meetings where appropriate.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
