ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs routine chemical, physical, bacteriological and toxicity testing of plant influent, effluent, industrial user and process waste waters, and process byproducts.

Collects samples; calibrates field equipment; conducts field analyses.

Properly transports and disposes of samples as required.

Performs data reduction and calculations; maintains related records.

Calibrates, maintains and services equipment and instruments; assists in conducting safety inspections of facility and equipment.

Prepares reagents and standards; prepares microbiological culture media as needed; prepares and cleans glassware, etc.

Performs required quality control / quality assurance activities.

Inventories and orders necessary supplies and materials; disposes properly of used/outdated chemicals.

Participates in required training and meetings.

Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, faxing information, answering the telephone, ordering and picking up supplies, etc.

Receives and reviews various records and reports including sampling chain of custody, flow charts, etc.

Prepares and/or processes laboratory reports and various other records and reports.

Refers to policy and procedure manuals, laws and regulations, safety manuals, technical reports and texts, computer manuals, equipment manuals, etc.

Operates a vehicle and various office equipment including a computer, printer, copier, calculator, fax machine, and telephone; operates laboratory equipment, including but not limited to sampling equipment, dissolved oxygen meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, open channel flow meters, atmospheric monitor, turbidity meter, drying oven, muffle furnace, water / dry baths, incubators, etc. Uses laboratory instruments and supplies, man hole puller, gauges, chemicals, clerical and computer supplies, various hand tools, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other County personnel, regulatory and other government agencies, sales representatives, industry representatives, customers, consultants, and the general public.
