Hussey Copper has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer located at its Eminence, KY location. The Manufacturing Engineer will lead process and product improvement efforts as a technical engineering specialist and resource to the operations team. This position will review product design for compliance using good engineering principals, company standards, and customer specifications. Will develop associated tooling for new extruded products. Will support manufacturing through process control & continuous improvement initiatives and troubleshoot technical problems. The position will develop manufacturing processes around new or existing equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for solving technical problems.
  • Through shop-floor interaction with supervisors and data collection will assist manager by preparing reports, identifying production trends, and implementing recommendations in any necessary department controls and procedures.
  • Reducing quality errors by identifying product defects and establishing corrective methods.
  • Implementing appropriate plans to improve profitability by maximizing efficiency to include waste, speed, delay, and raw material usage using Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Manage the coordination, implementation and standardization of manufacturing process improvement and tooling.
  • Recommend appropriate manufacturing standards, actual vs. estimate, and verify.
  • Improve processes in order to meet manufacturing standards.
  • At the time of tool tryout, understands workability of tools with the purpose of improving knowledge of design and helping tryout and design.
  • Perform work measurement studies, including time studies, process capability studies and uptime studies to meet pre-determined goals prior to formal handoff of project to manufacturing.
  • Be directly involved with continuous improvement teams, which may include being facilitator of a team or group of teams.
  • Incorporate safety into all aspects of the department and ensure safe working conditions during all activities associated within the manufacturing environment.
  • Research, justify, design and implement new processes, tooling, and equipment.
  • Procurement activities including obtaining bids, evaluating bids, and making purchase recommendations.
  • Document & prepare part specific work instructions and production router with key process parameters. Actively contribute to tooling design standards and strategies for tooling.
  • Primary point of contact and reference for tooling maintenance; preventative and corrective maintenance items related to tooling.
  • Tracking engineering revision levels for both the part model and die database.
  • Monitor tooling uptime for assigned die family and generate an improvement roadmap of countermeasures for all top issues causing downtime and stops (target is >90% tooling uptime at stated cycle time goal for part).
  • Design countermeasures and engineering trials; verify effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Generate and maintain standardization matrix for all tools in rotation that tracks implementation of verified corrective actions from roadmap.
  • Track tooling rotation and life and maintain refurbishment forecast.
  • Coordinate all external maintenance and improvement activities for assigned tools.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Must have metals extrusion and tooling design experience.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or closely related field of study.
  • Must have a minimum of 5-7 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong computer skills including AutoCAD, and proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Access
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must have strong communication skills.
  • Must have strong analytical skills.
