Description
The Patient Sitter position functions and demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate to their assigned age-specific, diverse patient population appropriately. This position is required to carry out assistant level tasks providing focused, unwavering level of observation of their patient while under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position documents all patient activity monitored every 15-minutes to ensure patient needs are met and records the data, established by policy and procedure, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse. The Patient Sitter will perform duties within unit specific defined limits and job scope while maintaining Houston Methodist ICARE values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist a Charge Nurse assigned to the patient to observe and document behaviors exhibited during the patients care. 
  • Maintain consistent view of patients location and room at all times during patient sitting.
  • Keep sitting station clean and clear of obstacles for safety and clear line of sight for patient and sitter. 
  • Communicate all concerns of patients care and safety to appropriate staff (ex. nurses, doctors, onsite officers) in timely fashion.
  • Restock blankets and food trays for patient needs if applicable to the care of the patient.
  • Will remain in seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be flexible to work 12 hour shifts Monday-Sunday, Holidays and Overnight schedules.
  • Must be COVID vaccinated or willing to take the vaccine including the booster shot. 
  • Must be willing to take the flu shot annually. 


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Ability to work 12 hour shifts
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to verbally communicate with behavioral health patients 
  • Previous healthcare experience 
  • Behavioral health and/or post trauma experience preferred 
  • EPIC experience preferred
