Title: Operations Manager

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Reports To: General Manager

Supervises: Supervisors, Operators, Dispatchers

Location: Davant, LA

United Bulk Terminals is the largest bulk terminal on the U.S. Gulf Coast and provides a complementary asset to Host’s growing network and services. The site specializes in coal and petcoke handling, with capacity for other bulk commodities.


Position Summary:
The Operations Manager will oversee four operations teams at the UBT terminal. These teams’ primary duties are to safely discharge barges, and load ocean going vessels as efficiently as possible. Operations to be conducted in accordance with terminal operating and environmental / safety procedures. UBT operates with 24/7 rotating shifts. Each shift has a team lead and dispatcher whom report to the Operations Manager. This role is responsible for planning and executing all operational functions at the terminal. Close coordination with other departments and terminal management is critical. The position includes financial forecasting on a weekly basis to effectively manage costs. Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Accountable for all aspects of operations at the terminal.
  • Ensure all operational, safety, security, environmental and business procedures/standards, policies are being adhered to with terminal operations.
  • Maintaining operational
  • Manage four Team Leaders each with 14 personnel on Du Pont rotating shift schedule.
  • Engage with all operational teams to drive safety and performance objectives.
  • Closely monitor and track operational performance on tons being handled.
  • Ability to adapt and implement necessary changes where needed.
  • Create and provide daily shift work orders for the Operations Department
  • Managing mobile equipment allocation in accordance with maintenance schedules and operational needs.
  • Implementing change processes with all direct reports, and other applicable managers at the terminal.
  • Conduct Root cause analysis investigations into incidents. Communicate findings to all direct reports and terminal management.
  • Work with Logistics Manager to efficiently plan product placement in coordination with vessel loading schedules.
  • Oversee operational hiring and termination process in coordination with H/R.
  • Manage operational contractors and their schedules when employed on site.
  • Ensure correct time entry, manage time entry of the Operations Department in ADP.
  • Manage the annual and weekly expense forecast process for operations department.
  • Ensure that dispatchers are closely aligned with operational schedule and orders for the efficient movement of barges and vessels at the terminal.
  • Create and manage training schedules with team leads for all applicable operational staff at the facility.
  • Ensure that all operational staff are signed off and in compliance with ESV equipment verification.
  • Set operational goals and objectives for terminal operations
  • Ensure human resource policies and issues are consistently applied within company expectations.
  • Track and Communicate the KPI results (key performance indicators) at terminal.
  • Create Operations job aids and update as needed.
  • Other directives as assigned by terminal management.


Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferable and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in marine terminal or mining management (coal and petcoke experience preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing or oversight responsibility of safety programs.
  • Ability to handle issues quickly, safely and effectively in a stressful operating environment
  • Self- starter with strong leadership, communications, analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Superb organizational skills, with the demonstrated ability to create and implement efficient organizational systems
  • Willingness to learn through “hands on” training which may be physical at times
  • Flexible team player with an opportunistic mindset
  • Valid driver’s license and TWIC or ability to obtain a TWIC required

Physical Requirements:

  • Work in most weather conditions and around heavy machinery, which can be dangerous at times
  • Shift work which may require early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must meet “fit for duty” requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test)
