Job Summary:

Supports Facilities Services by performing custodial duties in an assigned area, such as cleaning interior of building and setting-up and preparing for campus events, which may include carrying, unfolding, and arranging chairs and tables and so forth. Completes projects not able to be performed during normal business hours such as office trash, and classroom cleaning. Responds to emergency calls from security throughout shift hours.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists with events and activities cleaning/custodial needs.
  • Using vacuum cleaners, both upright and canister with attachments, vacuum all appropriate areas in building.
  • Using a mop and a mop bucket with wringer, cleans all hard surface floors in assigned areas.
  • Following the instructions in the custodial manual, scrubs, rinses, and waxes hard surface floors as assigned.
  • Using automatic low-speed and high-speed buffers, buffs hard surface floors in assigned area.
  • Sanitize all appropriate surfaces in rest rooms.
  • Reading both Drury University and manufacturer's instructions, mixes and applies chemicals where necessary to complete task.
  • Using liquid and dry cleaners, as outlined in the custodial manual, disinfects toilets, showers, sinks, cabinets, floors, walls and so forth.
  • Assist in moving equipment and furniture as assigned.
  • Reviews the written campus event schedule for events in assigned work area, and consults supervisor for additional instructions for set-up and preparation of those events. This may include carrying, unfolding, climbing, hanging, and arranging tables, chairs, podiums, microphones and so forth.
  • Report to work and keep time records in compliance with university policy.
  • Reports all needed repairs to proper office by using a completed on-line work order form, and departmental policies.
  • Checks out and assume responsibility for keys to assigned area.
  • Using a broom or a shovel, removes accumulated snow in front of building entrances.
  • Attends all assigned meetings.
  • Using computers in facilities services break room, submits all time off requests in a timely manner complying with departmental policy.

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions in order to follow and understand the custodial manual and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ability to speak, read and understand the English language in order to follow the custodial manual, safety posters and procedures, and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ability to lift, bend and squat in order to assist in set-ups and preparation of campus events, move equipment, and perform job duties.
  • Ability to set goals, prioritize tasks, and evaluate progress toward those goals in order to accomplish assigned work.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills are necessary in order to communicate effectively with management, students, faculty, staff, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Basic understanding of math, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and use ratios, generally acquired in high school, is necessary in order to mix chemicals.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for the security of equipment, supplies and keys.
  • Ability to climb ladders to a height of ten (10) feet in order to change light bulbs, clean glass, and dust high places.
  • Ability to see in order to read instructions.
  • Ability to hear to respond to alarms and radio communications for security purposes.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 45 pounds to assist in campus event set-ups and to move equipment.
  • Ability to write in order to fill out work orders and time off requests.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team in order to set up campus activities/events.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
