Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Gardener

Classification: Seasonal FT

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The summer groundskeeper / gardener performs duties related to general maintenance, upkeep and cultivation of grounds and gardens located within the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort area. These areas encompass the resort’s gardens, lawn and border areas, pathways and hardscapes as well as plant containers located around the resort.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

To carry out a variety of daily gardening and grounds keeping duties as directed by the Garden Supervisor.

  • Performs general physical activities associated with gardening and grounds keeping including walking, lifting, carrying, bending, stooping and handling garden materials and tools.
  • Cultivates and prepares soil for planting.
  • Weeds and mulches landscapes.
  • Waters plant containers and performs daily plant maintenance.
  • Keeps containers clean, properly functioning and in good condition.
  • Prepares containers for planting, including cleaning and preparing soil.
  • Assists the Garden Supervisor in planting garden beds and plant containers.
  • Places containers to designated areas using a dolly, trailer or by carrying.
  • Maintains stone and rock gardens, stone borders and other hardscapes as needed.
  • Maintains shrubs and trees within the resort through pruning, shearing and thinning.
  • Maintains sections of Crystal Creek that wind through the resort boundary, keeping the waterway clear of debris, grass, weeds and garbage.
  • Keeps wild areas, borders and shrub areas within the resort clean and manicured.
  • Monitors the drip irrigation system and performs updates, repairs and regular system checks.
  • Keeps resort pathways, stairwells and hardscapes in good aesthetic and working condition through a variety of ways including weeding, raking, leaf blowing, sweeping, and replacement of fill materials.
  • Operates vehicles, mechanized devices and equipment, and repairs and maintains mechanized equipment.
  • Maintains a clean work environment and workshop.
  • Keeps tools clean and in proper working condition.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in additional projects determined by the Garden Supervisor.
  • Assists in keeping the hardscapes, decks, tram dock and base area terminal areas clean and/or weeded.
  • Assists with keeping the resort trash and recycling receptacles clean.
  • Assists in maintaining, filling and cleaning mutt-mitt stations.
  • Assists in trash pick-up around the resort.

  • Plant knowledge - plant care, plant health, proper maintenance techniques, zone determination and plant ecology.
  • Hardscape knowledge - Maintenance and upkeep of hardscape which includes carrying, moving, and placing a variety of hardscape materials.

EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalency required.
  • Basic knowledge of plants, lawns, and their care.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Previous gardening or groundskeeping experience preferred

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

  • Water buckets, hoses, and sprinklers.
  • Trowels, shovels, rakes, and weed pullers.
  • Lawn mowers and weed trimmers.
  • Four wheeled buggies and company vehicles.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

The Summer Groundskeeping/Gardening position requires the ability to lift and carry heavy loads (50lbs or more), perform work in inclement weather and/or extreme temperatures, and perform outlined projects for extended periods of time. Qualified applicants should be comfortable and capable of working within these parameters.
