Description

Geoscience Program Support Technician - Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences

 

Description: The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks to hire a Geoscience Program Support Technician to start August 1, 2024. This is a 12-month full-time staff position with a competitive salary and full benefits. The Program Support Technician will support the academic mission and assist in the expansion of experiential learning opportunities within the department. The technician will serve as the department lab safety officer, provide training on certain analytical and research equipment, maintain and provide training on common-use rock preparation equipment, coordinate and maintain technical field equipment, and assist with field trip execution. The technician will also provide support for classroom and laboratory educational experiences by designing, constructing and maintaining instructional demonstrations and curating teaching specimen collections. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is the state’s flagship research institution, located in East Tennessee close to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences comprises an energetic group of tenure-track and teaching faculty, post-doctoral and staff researchers, and ~150 graduate and undergraduate students. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in geoscience or a related field; typical field and laboratory geoscience skills; ability to use manual and power tools to safely construct educational interactives; ability to create and maintain detailed records; ability to safely drive large vehicles, including trucks and vans with passengers.

Preferred Qualifications: A Master’s degree in geoscience or a related field. One or more years of experience with experiential learning in geosciences and familiarity with leading experiential learning opportunities in geosciences; ability to organize collections of geologic materials (ex. fossils, rocks, minerals); ability to operate and maintain scanning electron microscopes; ability to operate and maintain, or facilitate maintenance of, optical microscopes; ability to safely operate and maintain geological sample preparation equipment.
