Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

The Joan M. Lafleur College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Texas Southern University is seeking qualified and experienced academic support specialist for the Biomedical Sciences program. Under the direction of the Department Chair and the Program Director, the academic support specialist will coordinate the daily activities for the biomedical science program by serving as a resource for the COPHS to provide academic support to the students and best practices for the biomedical sciences program.

Essential Duties Summary:
  • Collaborates with program director in the recruitment, and placement of mentees; maintains contacts with faculty for peer mentor recommendations; reviews and completes necessary forms to hire new and re-hire student mentees and mentors.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day actives of the academic support areas, such as mentoring and academic resources.
  • Collaborates with program director to provide mentoring workshops; orients mentors and mentees in the use of tracking software, and recordkeeping procedures; makes recommendations and participates in the development and implementation of mentoring methods and best practices including techniques in effective mentoring strategies.
  • Oversees and monitors mentoring activities; develops, enters, maintains, and tracks mentoring schedules; assigns departmental projects to mentees as necessary.
  • Guides students in the use of instructional technology and additional resources as needed; provides support to mentors and mentees as needed.
  • Gathers and maintains campus-wide information of the location, times, and type of student academic support services offered; assists in updating department webpage; develops and prepares informational materials related to services on campus.
  • Monitors and tracks expenditures and provides regular reports to the appropriate administrator; assists in resolving budget issues.
  • Prepares and presents available academic support services to the program director; assists in the coordination of events and activities related to mentoring services.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of new programs; makes recommendations for activities to support learning.
  • Plan, design, and conduct workshops and programming that facilitates learning, provides enrichment opportunities, and empowers students to become active and engaged learners.
  • Checks out books, equipment, and related materials to students and faculty; maintains inventory of supplies; enters requisition requests; reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor and submits service requests as needed.
  • Collects, organizes, prepares, and maintains a variety of records, statistics, and reports related to the mentoring program; prepares reports regarding total number of student hours and total number of mentor hours.
  • Performs other duties related to the primary job duties.

Work Experience:
  • One to two (1-2) years of responsible work experience including some experience in an academic coach or academic advising environment or coordinating department activities.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting.
