Job Summary:

The Energy Management Specialist is responsible for the university’s overall utility management program and activities with the goal of reducing utility use and carbon emissions while maintaining campus operations. This includes managing utility use, renewable energy and carbon reduction programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees and/or conducts energy audits at each facility to identify energy conservation measures.
  • Prepares and disseminates energy performance reports to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leads energy awareness education and engagement activities, including at external events and meetings.
  • Develops and manages organization’s energy budget in coordination with other offices, which includes tracking energy consumption, costs/budget forecasting and advises on energy commodity purchasing.
  • Researches, recommends and initiates renewable energy and carbon reduction projects.
  • Plans and advocates for UTA’s future renewable energy use and carbon reduction goals in coordination with UTA’s sustainability office.
  • Applies for and manages incentives and grants that support energy projects and programs.
  • Tracks, analyzes, and acts on state and federal energy legislation and regulations that impact the organization.
  • Maintains central energy database that includes utility and operational data; performs energy data entry and energy data analysis activities.
  • Participates in capital improvement and new construction projects concerning facility design to ensure maximum resource efficiency and sustainable building practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s in engineering, environmental science or related field.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of professional experience in energy or facility management, environmental services, engineering, or equivalent experience promoting resource efficiency within an organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with budgeting, procurement, contract documents and financing including grant programs.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP), Building Operator Certification (BOC), or other relevant credentials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of building science, mechanical systems, lighting, and controls equipment.
  • Knowledge of carbon reduction strategies.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy systems and operation.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building designs and construction plans, control drawings, service bulletins, technical procedure manuals, equipment specifications, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to drive UTA vehicle.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
Working Conditions:

Conditions do involve exposure to all weather elements. Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings. Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as biohazards, toxic lab chemicals, poisonous gases dust, dirt, high, voltage, and the need to work in confined spaces, extreme cold or hot and all-weather conditions.
