Job Title: Plant 1 - Labor – Welding/Fabrication


Position Description: As a Welding/Fabrication Laborer at Plant 1, you will play a crucial role in assisting with various welding tasks to support the construction, repair, and maintenance of plant equipment and structures. Your primary focus will be on assisting welders in setting up, operating, and maintaining welding equipment, as well as preparing materials for welding. This role requires attention to safety, basic knowledge of welding techniques, and physical dexterity.


Location: Mt. Airy, NC Plant


Established in the Blue Ridge foothills of North Carolina in 1963, Leonard Buildings and Truck Accessories is a manufacturer and distributor whose product lines include storage buildings, cargo and utility trailers, truck covers, truck and van accessories, carports, playhouses, chicken coops, and dog houses. We serve our residential, commercial, fleet, and government customers through our 150+ retail store locations in eighteen states, supported by our corporate offices (in Mount Airy, NC, and Cobden, IL), distribution centers, and strategically located manufacturing facilities.


Job Summary:

The Welder is based at Mt. Airy, NC Plant with operations in the U.S., and has overall responsibility for Welding. This position reports directly to the Supervisor and has no direct reports.


Job Responsibilities:

  1. Welding:
    • Preparing materials and workpieces for welding, including cutting, grinding, and cleaning surfaces to be welded.
    • Position and hold workpieces in place during welding operations, using clamps, fixtures, or other holding devices.
  2. Welding Equipment Setup:
    • Setting up welding equipment, such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) machines.
    • Ensure welding machines are properly connected and in good working condition.
  3. Weld Inspection and Quality Control:
    • Help inspect welded joints for quality and consistency, reporting any defects or issues to the lead welder or supervisor.
    • Assist in performing visual inspections and non-destructive tests to ensure welding integrity.
  4. Safety Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines while working in the welding area, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe working practices.
    • Report any safety hazards or incidents to supervisors promptly.
  5. Material Handling:
    • Move and transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from the welding area.
    • Organize and maintain an inventory of welding materials and consumables.
  6. Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Assist in cleaning and maintaining welding equipment to ensure its proper functioning and longevity.
    • Keep the welding area clean and organized to promote a safe and efficient work environment.
  7. Team Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with welders, other laborers, and supervisors to complete welding tasks efficiently and according to project requirements.
    • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth workflow.

Competencies (skills, knowledge, and abilities):Education/Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least two years of experience in welding/fabrication or labor-related roles. Preferably in a construction environment.
  • Basic knowledge of welding techniques, equipment setup, and materials preparation.
  • Physical strength and the ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Familiarity with different welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, GTAW).
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work.
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude towards teamwork and cooperation.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or adjust work hours as needed to meet project deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to lift at least 60 lbs.

· Must be able to bend, squat and work in a fast-paced environment.
