Position Summary:

The purpose of the Laborer Trainee position is to introduce individuals into the construction industry and to help them advance toward journey-level status in the highway construction industry, as outlined the PennDOT OJT Program. This position provides the opportunity for on-the-job training with a well-respected heavy/highway construction company. The goal of this position is to train individuals on what is expected of them when working in the construction industry, which includes learning and performing general laborer job tasks and to assist in the completion of project goals. Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be able to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to perform physical activities which includes, but is not limited to, lifting, pulling, pushing, and/or carrying different types of objects/materials.
  • Performing and learning how to prepare worksite zones, installing traffic barricades, cones, markers, and controlling traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
  • Works with labor crew and Laborer Foreman in the reading of roadway plans and drawings
  • Learning how to operate a variety of equipment, which includes, jackhammers, plate tampers, concrete mortar/mixers, electric/hydraulic machines, torches, seal pots, chainsaw/quickie saws, and heavy walk behind flat saws.
  • Learn and assist with jackhammering concrete and pouring concrete.
  • Demonstrate evidence of a reasonable amount of aptitude and interest in the craft.
  • Caring for company machines/equipment/tools.
  • Keep working sites clean of all unused/waste materials and ensure all equipment is stored in a safe and secure manner.
  • Willingness to use/learn how to use hand/power tools and other construction machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Ensure the practice of safety standards in accordance with company policies and OSHA.
  • Willingness to perform and learn different aspects of the Construction Laborer position.
  • Following instructions from supervisors.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Workdays & Shifts:

  • Must be available to work varied shifts (days, nights, weekends).
  • Willingness to travel for extended periods of time.

Education/Certification(s)/License(s):

  • High school diploma or equivalent - Preferred.
  • Valid driver's license - Preferred.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Prior experience as a laborer or equivalent experience - Preferred..
  • Mechanical aptitude - Preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screens & background check, including MVR.
  • Must be in a union or be willing to join a union.
